The monastery was founded in the 6th century and was one of the largest in Connaught. The Cathedral dates from the 11th to 17th centuries and the round tower 11-12th century. Even in the west of Ireland many buildings were made from timber and little trace remains of the early monastery. The tower has a slight lean.
