The first lighthouse on the Oregon coast was built on the north
spit of the Umpqua River in 1857. However, it was destroyed
in 1861 when it fell into the river after a severe storm. Today’s
Umpqua Lighthouse, with its 65-foot tower, overlooks dunes
from 165 feet above the south side of Winchester Bay. Its lens
emits distinctive red and white automated flashes.
