DSCF2713_evening rose.JPG

strong evening backlighting

This was taken on May 22, the absolute warmest day of the year so far. Temperatures reached 86 degrees here today at the airport. Evening brought with it a welcome cooling. I shot this at 7:30 pm, with the last rays of the sun on the sky,and a large cedar tree as my background. I was about seven feet away from the light, pale pink rose, so I stopped down to f/9.5 with the plunger, liked the background highlight rendition I saw at f/9.5,and shot with an exposure that favored the sky-tones. I didn't want the sky to burn out,and I knew I'd get a subtle, almost black and white rendition from the S2 in this situation. With the rose in profile, and the leaf being overlapped onto the shadowy base of the large cedar tree. This was my second frame out of eight, with progressively more and more exposure given each frame. I actually preferred this semi-silhouetted frame the best, even though three clicks slower (1.5 stops slower) on the shutter yields a brighter foreground and still mananges to hold most of the "visible" sky tones. I just think the darker rendition of this scene, this exposure, is the way to go for this picture.
