Kylie set for red carpet honour
November 27, 2007 12:00am
KYLIE Minogue will be honoured by Tourism Australia and the Federal Government for her role in promoting Australia overseas at a red carpet event in Hollywood in January.
The pop star was officially confirmed as an honouree this morning - five weeks after News Limited first revealed Minogue would celebrated at the annual G'day LA ball, part of the government's ten-day G'day USA push to promote Australia across North America.
Minogue, 39, follows in the footsteps of Crocodile Hunter STEVE IRWIN, who was honoured post-humously at this year's ball for his services to promoting Aussie tourism.
Irwin's widow Terri and daughter Bindi accepted the award on his behalf.
It is understood that the Spinning Around singer will perform at least one song at the event, which is a a highlight on the Aussie expat social calendar and attracts the country's biggest screen stars.
Tables at the ball are already selling for up to $A22,500 each, with rumours of Minogue's presence leading to a rush on tickets over the past month.
Two other high profile people will also be feted alongside Minogue for significant contributions in their industries and for excellence in promoting Australia in the US, with the announcement of their identities to be made next month.
As well as Irwin, this year's sold-out gala event also honoured Naomi Watts and Russell Crowe.
Previous honourees include Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann, Anthony LaPaglia, Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Olivia Newton John, Hugh Jackman and INXS.
The ball will take place on January 19 at the Renaissance Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard.
G'day USA's 2008 program will include a series of events in Los Angeles and New York between January 17 and Australia Day.
