Steve Irwin a huge hit
January 26, 2007 12:00am
STEVE Irwin mania remains rampant in the United States with more than 10 million viewers watching the documentary he filmed during the week he was killed.
Discovery and Animal Planet ran tributes to Irwin, including the documentary Ocean's Deadliest.
Irwin died from a stingray attack during the program's filming.
The show averaged 1.78 million on Discovery while on Animal Planet, it drew 1.57 million.
That was 133 per cent up on the network's prime-time average in January, according to Nielsen Media Research.
There was also a half-hour tribute show, Crikey! What an Adventure, which averaged 1.31 million viewers on Discovery and 1.56 million on Animal Planet, also up 133 per cent over Animal Planet's January prime-time average.
Overall, the two-hour block on both networks pulled in more than 10 million viewers.
Channel 9 will screen Ocean's Deadliest on Monday night and the network is expecting it to be one of the highest-rating programs of the year.
Nine is expecting it to be watched by more than a million viewers nationally.
The show will be a major lead-in to the premiere of the network's new $1 million game show 1 vs 100 which will mark the on-air return of Nine chief Eddie McGuire.
Ocean's Deadliest features an exclusive introduction by Irwin's wife, Terri, and teams the crocodile hunter with Philippe Cousteau, grandson of famed oceanographer Jacques-Ives Cousteau.
Together the pair investigate the dangerous creatures that have called the crystalline waters of Australia's eastern shores home for thousands of years.
Adding his own expertise of the undersea world, Cousteau joins Irwin to uncover the truth about these unique creatures and their natural place in the eco-system.
As they travel the Australian coastline in search of deadly marine life, Irwin and Cousteau track and capture saltwater crocodiles, venomous sea snakes and dive with great white sharks.
