My great grandfather was the caretaker at Mt Olivet in the 1800's. His name was James Scalf. They lived on the cemetary grounds and my grandmother was raised in the cemetary. She had a lifelong interest in cemetaries.

I visited this cemetery when I was 17. My friend and I decided to go down to Nashville for our high school spring break. Well, we decided to go as far south as we could, from Michigan. We made it Nashville. I have always loved cemetries, my friend, he didn't quite as much but was willing to go along. It is one of the most fascinating and beautiful places Ive been in. Your pictures are wonderful, thanks for sharing them!

Would love to know the stories behind some of these graves, I visit the graveyard severytime I go to Nashville, ex: Furmans, the big markers, I searched some of them.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans camp in Nashville began doing a living histroy walking tour in 1993. It is usually the second Saturday in October;hence, the 2009 tours will be on 10-10-09.Money raised has been put into a varity of projects in the cemetery. We have a voice mail number; 615-780-3598.

Mt Olivet has had it's challenges in the past(former owners) but the current ownership is committed to restoring the grandness it deserves. I notice the grounds have continued to improve each year. The funeral home is beautiful and the history is amazing. My family loves to visit there.

It's a romantic and spooky place -- not well kept. My husband's family is buried there, and we went back when his father died last week. We buried his father in a veteran's cemetery because he didn't want to be buried there because it isn't kept up. Two old buildings on the property have been falling apart for years, broken windows with curtains billowing in the breeze, clover all over the grass (unmown), and at my husband's family plot, an old gardening glove and bottle under an old boxwood bush. Creepy, creepy place, but some beautiful monuments. No doubt most of those buried there don't have families visiting or it would be better kept.

My favorite place in Nashville to visit, wish I had known about it when I lived in Nashville, I've taken hundreds of pics and am working on a clickable map of the cemetery that loads photo pages for the items clicked.

OH HOW I REMEMBER MT.OLIVET CEMETARY!!!!! MY COUSIN LIVED JUST DOWN THE STREET. ONE NIGHT A BOY I LIKED THAT LIVED NEAR HER AND SOME MORE GUYS DARED US TO GO THERE AFTER DARK. WHICH WE DID. THOSE BOYS HAD GOTTEN THERE BEFORE US AND HAD FUN SCARING US TO DEATH!!!!! I EVEN GOT KISSED BY THE BOY WHO I LIKED, OUR VISIT TO THE CEMETERY WAS ALL DONE IN FUN. THAT WAS DONE WAY BACK IN THE60'S.

unfortunately, several of the monuments including the "medora" monument have been damaged or vandalized, some in the oldest pre-civil war sections of the cemtery. They should consider locking their gates as calvary cemetery next door does at dark. nice photos.

What a beautiful cemetery. I just found out my great-grandfather is buried there. I hope that someday I can see Mt Olivet Cemetery in person.

i lived in salem,or my ex son-in law pass away on march28 2006 his name is brandon w.counts section33 lot72,would you take a picture of his grave,his baby is buried beside of brandon.i didnot find out about brandon death until feb9 2006my.i have a eye disease and don;t see well,he was a great son-law.my daughter live in mich.thanks if you could help me.my phone is 503-581-2235 phyllis garrison
