Back in 1854, Bavarian Gustav Clauss established the first wine estate in Greece. He built a settlement with cathedral belfry towers, thus creating a micro-society of people who live and work around the nucleus of wine production. Since 1861, when it started its operation, the Achaia Clauss company has changed ownership and moved to larger modern plants, but has not changed its tradition which is renowned across the world for excellence in wine making.

The old settlement, aspects of which are depicted in the following pictures, is now being visited by more than 200,000 visitors per year and comprises, among others, huge barrels full of famous Mavrodaphne red wine since 1873 - the second oldest preserved wine in the world.
