7/9/06 - The Moon is a Love Song
Happy Birthday, Sweetie!

Gaithersburg, MD

I didn't expect to get a PAD pic today, but as I was coming home I noticed this incredible orange moon (full moon, at that) rising in the south (or was that east? Let's make it southeast.) Fortunately I usually carry my camera and a tripod in my car, so I hopped out, found a spot where I wouldn't get run down, and started shooting. I varied just about everything but the focal length (200mm). Even though I have a VR lens (Nikon 18-200mm) and used the self-timer, I couldn't get anything close to a sharp image except a "higher" shutter speeds. I don't think 200mm is much of a lens to try astronomical shots, anyway. At least the color is correct; it really was a rusty orange moon. There wasn't anything else of interest to include in the shot, so this is pretty boring -- but that's my PAD, and I'm sticking to it.

PS - Crop. Level adjustment (minor), and smart sharpening (which didn't do much, for obvious reasons -- no edges).

Great capture! I'm up here in Vermont, and I just got home from a long drive and the moon is orange up here too.
Ever see the movie Moonstruck? It's "Cosmo's Moon."
