Dacheungtap 9-Story Pagoda

Saeshimsa Buddhist Temple, South Korea view map

The pagoda was built to enshrine sarira (relics of Buddha or a Buddhist saint). This is a nine-story pagoda made of granite and slate. Originally the roofs without their trunks (stanchions) supporting them of the stories of the pagoda were placed uncared for on a large lotus flower-shaped stone in front of the main building of the temple. Each square trunk supporting its roof of each story was inserted by the two monks called ILTA and DOGYUN in 1956 and the pagoda was restored to the present condition.

On the top of the basic three granite slabs placed one upon another is a slab of slate, then on the top of it is a lotus flower-shaped slab. Of the square trunks of the nine stories of the pagoda the lowest one is made of four stone slabs set up on four sides and the other eight ones are made of one hexahedral stone respectively. On each corner of the four sides of the square trunks is sculptured a rectangular pillar. Below the roofs of the pagoda are two stone slabs, one placed upon the other upside down, on which are sculptured the designs of lotus flowers. The upper part of the pagoda is made of roundish slates.

The period when this pagoda was built is presumed to be during the Goryeo Dynasty in the light if the discovered fragments of Goryeo tile, the manner in which the pagoda was sculptured, and the material of which the pagoda is constructed.
