Manzanar Internment Center -Owens Valley, California

Manzanar National Historic Site was established to preserve the stories of the internment of nearly 12,000 Japanese Americans during World War II and to serve as a reminder to this and future generations of the fragility of American civil liberties.

PERSONAL NOTE: The following pictures were taken on Oct.17th, 2005 while on a trip up north to photograph the foliage in the eastern Sierra's. I had previously driven by Manzanar several times but this time I decided to take the time to stop in and see what it was all about. I had of course heard of Manzanar over the years and knew the reason and history behind it. I have to say though that being there and seeing with my own eyes the landscape, walking through the remnants of what where once living quarters, gardens, Buddhist temples, recreation areas, a cemetery where six internees are buried, had an impact on me that I hadn't anticipated. I felt a sense of both outrage and embarrassment that such an incredible social injustice against it's own citizens could have happened here in America. Unfortunately, for the most part there are no buildings left intact, only a few concrete slabs where they once stood, stone steps to nowhere and a few remains of what were once beautiful gardens with elaborate waterfalls and pools.I wanted to share these pictures with those that have not had the opportunity to see first hand what these 12,000 internees, almost two-thirds who were American citizens by birth, had to endure over a period of three years. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the site I would highly recommend it. Additional information about this site can be found at: www.nps.gov/manz
