I travelled together with 5 other birders from 07-21 June to the Russian Federation. We visited the Ural Mountains which form part of the physiographic boundary between Europe and Asia and, for European birders, constitute the easternmost corner of the Western Palearctic region. Our trip aimed at finding local breeding specialities that are absent from western Europe. Overall, the journey was successful but rather difficult due to the remoteness of the Urals and the rainy weather experienced during the first week. We initially flew from western Europe (Brussels/London) to Yekaterinburg city and moved northwards by road to the southern Urals (9-13 June). There, we spent 3 days in mixed forests west of Severouralsk, followed by a two-days visit to Mt Kvarkush. For the second week of the trip, we returned to Yekaterinburg and then followed the Ural river southwards (15-19 June) to reach the district (or oblast) of Orenburg (close to the Kazakhstan border), where we spent a few days birding the Russian steppes north-west of Orsk (i.e., within WP boundaries). This gallery has 168 images depicting 33 bird species. |
