Miller Jeep Trail is located off Interstate 5 about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles. It is quite short -- only three miles, but to get there you first have to take the much longer Lockwood Mountain Trail, which winds over several mountain ridges taking you from the Lockwood Valley to Lockwood Flat. Then the Miller Trail takes you straight up the side of Alamo Mountain. Harry Lewellyn in his trail guide advises not to take this trail unless you enjoy body damage. Naturally, that simply increases interest among off-road enthusiasts. So just how tough could it be? I took my first trip in 1999 in a stock Isuzu Trooper, but I was only able to make it half way up Miller. This latest trip was origanized and led by Tom Severin, of Badlands Off Road Adventures, Inc (www.4x4training.com). Driving a Rubicon made the trip a lot easer. But it was also great to have an experienced coach to guide me through the tough spots. After driving Miller you feel that you can go just about anywhere.
