As Kids we always considered it good luck to shake the Elephants tail as we went by..

I rode mmy bicycle past Elephant Cottage many, many times as a boy. We never thought of the significance of taking a photograph of these wonderful old cottages when we were young.

I am the current owner of Elephant Cottage and would like to consider restoring the elephant. Does anyone have any photos of the elephant itself?

YES, YOU'RE RIGHT. THIS IS ELEPHANT COTTAGE. SO CALLED BECAUSE THE ANCIENT YEW HEDGE BY THE GATE WAS FASHIONED, BY TOPIARY, INTO AN ELEPHANT. THE TRUNK FORMED AN ARCH BY THE COTTAGE ROOF, AND THE LITTLE TAIL STUCK OUT OVER THE LOWER HEDGE, AT THE GATE. EVERYONE KNEW IN THOSE DAYS WHY IT WAS CALLED ELEPHANT COTTAGE, IT WAS SO OBVIOUS. ALAS, THE ORIGINAL COTTAGE IS NO MORE - REPLACED BY A MORE MODERN VERSION OF A THATCHED HOUSE, AND THE ELEPHANT HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO BECOME OVERGROWN, AND UNCUT. SUCH A SHAME, AS IT WAS A LANDMARK, AND QUITE UNIQUE TO ECCHINSWELL......
