Hi everyone, I was stationed at Welford from 1966-1970. It was a great tour, fantastic people and country. I see an old friend left a message, Steve Olish. I have a picture of him Ray B. and myself, I was known as Craz in those days, at the club at Greenham AFB.

I was born in the house my parents lived in , in September 1963 I believe my Mum grew up in this area. I came to Philadelphia when I was 3 on the Queen Mary. I am hoping to take a trip back to visit the area next year. If I come across any old photos , I'd be happy to share.

Hi Kim,did you actually live in Welford base houses?I moved here in 2007,the houses are all privately owned now.I would like to see any pics of these houses from the past.Whilst digging a few years ago I unearthed some old toy soldiers and a few American bottle tops,made me think of all the families who had lived in my house over the years.Would be interesting to compare photos of then and now.

In the mid-50s I lived at 19 Charles St. in Newbury and later in Burclere when my dad was stationed at Greenham Common. I have longed to go back for more than 50 years and plan to scratch this off my bucket list next year? Any of the kids who went to school at Crookham House in the 50s want to join me?

Lovely pictures, I wish I could visit again. My first husband "Trey" was based at RAF Welford and Greenham Common, 67-70, we were married on base at Greenham Common June 1969. First son born at the Royal Berks hospital 1970. Only managed to go back a few times, thanks for sharing, even more lovely than my memories. Gillian

Jerry....I'm so sorry I don't remember your sister.....did you live on base? I got married in 1973 and left Welford.....lived in Upper Bucklebury until fall of '74. I have very few housing pictures of Welford.....I haven't looked at those in ages! I'll have to sort them out and see what I 've got. If you did live on base...what part?

What wonderful pictures! I was at Welford from 1969-1973.....loved it! My dad was stationed there and I went to school at RAF Lakenheath and then to London Central High School in Hgh Wycombe. Best place we were ever assigned.....have been back several times....still feel the same way! My mom worked at the bx and the bookstore on base.....anybody remember Joann Weicuss? I'm her daughter, Karen. I have a brother, Paul and my dad's name was Ray. Anybody out there from those days? Would love to hear from you!

This comment is for anyone who was stationed at RAF Welford from 1970 to 1973. Do any of you remember a Female (Typist-Clerk) that worked for the U.S. Air Force by the name of Linda Jean Chaplin?? She was an american, married to a Brit. She committed suicide in Dec of 1972 (her body was found in the town of Wraysbury). Linda was my mother and I am trying to find any body that knew her or any information or pictures that somebody may have about her. Thank You

Rudy - Anyone else stationed at RAF Welford or RAF Greenham Common from 1968 to 1971? I remember "The Bridge", "Victoria Park", and "Northbrook Street". At the end of Northbrook Street by the clock tower used to be Bacon's Arm Pub. That used to be one of the pubs I frequented.

Lived in Ecchinswell on a farm belonging to a judge the year the Queen had her Coronation. Sis & I would go through the fields to Kinsclerc & also went to school i Eccinswell before coming to Canada in Dec.of 54. Remember a Taxi Johnson & a Mr. West that looked after the chickens.I was 8 & sis 10. Scared walking down lane to farm on the way home from school as bull sometimes got loose. I'm 65 now but still remember the thatch cottages & they are close to my heart. Watership Down movie also made me remember that place I loved.

I was on TDY tour( 3 mo. stints) in 1957-58 and during the Hungarian uprising when the Soviets invaded that notion. I recall, while at Greenham Common and with SAC that one early afternoon a beautiful Hawker Hunter fighter flew on low speed through a very large hanger, in one door and out the other. I was amazed even more when landed and taxied back to the hanger a young bloke with only three stripes exited from the aircraft. I loved trips to Newbury, nearby..And ahhh... the heavenly fresh fish and chips in a horse drawn wagon coming to the RAF base frequently.

I was stationed at RAF Welford from 1968 to 1972. I really enjoyed my time there and still think of it often. I can still remember and miss the taste of Lobster Pilaf at a local resturant.

My sister and I went to ecchinswell school ( I think we were the only americans that went there at the time) and had many good friends that I still think of today. I still remember the headmaster Mr. Holloway. Thanks for posting these wonderful pictures.

My Dad was at Greenham Common 1955 to 1959. I was in the 4th grade when we got there and the school was in an old manor house - moved classes to the base in 58. 1st lived in Wicham, Honeythatch Cottage - later at 44 Kings Road in Newbury. Recall watching everyone walking up King Road to go to the races - even saw the Queen go by once. For some reason I've had Newbury on my mind lately and was so pleased to find this site. Thank you!

I was born in Newbury in 1962 and came to the U.S. with my "adopted" parents, who were also stationed at Greenham Common. I was so fortunate to return to my birthplace in 1993 to really see it for the first time. It was so magical. My visit was especially wonderful as I was able to locate my biological grandmother and younger brother who still lives in England (Marlborough). Since this time I have also located my younger sister who now lives only 30 minutes from me!!! Now were looking forward to returning for the 2012 London Olympics...

Wonderful photos! Brought back lots of lovely childhood memories. We were stationed at Greenham Common AFB '72 to '76. I've been searching everywhere for the name of the manor house that we stayed at arriving and departing the base. Anyone know it's name? Was it boarded up when the base closed, or is it open?

I went to Newbury in 1985 with few friends from my hometown Veracruz, Mexico to study for a month in the Regent's School, we get along with people from Turkey, Iceland, Sweden, Italy and some other european countries. It was great, I was very young 13 years old, but it remain memorable experiences.

debbie it was very nice looking at these photos. i lived in newbury for a long time. married my late husband in newbury. he was in the air force.i now live in the u.s. these photos bring back so many memories. i went to the shaw house school. it was an all girls school. i also worked at the lemon tree restarant, just over the newbury bridge. my late husband and i went to donnington castle every week end.it a sad but happy feeling when you look at photos from your home. when you are so far away. i do miss home.

I'm getting teary. My sister and I lived in the area in the early 60's (our dad was stationed at Greenham Common) and for a time we lived in what we called The Round House, which is I think is an old granary. I will have to dig up the picture; now I'm packing and moving. The first year we were there, there was "the worst snow they'd ever had," but gosh, it was beautiful. I so long to go back there; I had the happiest time in my childhood there, the people were kind and caring, and my heart will always remain in England. I live in Seattle now, which has a similar climate, but it's just not the same historically and culturally. Thanks so much for these wonderful photos.

Hi, I travel to Newbury at least once a year, sometimes more. Was at Greenham in 1976. Love England and this part of the country. Hasnt changed much! Beautiful countryside. Can hardly wait to retire in 4 years and move back to Newbury area, Im in Michigan now. Wife is from Newbury, and we both consider it home now. Thanks for the beautiful pics! What a pleasure to see the village again. I lived in Fossicks Cottage in the late 70's early 80's. I loved it so much but sadly had to return to the USA. When I go back ( which is rarely ) I always go back to see the village. I had a few really good friends there. Some of which I know are still there. Dave -- I drove through this area in December of 2000 and it was indeed beautiful. How wonderful to find your pictures here and see it again. I took a couple of pictures myself while in the area (I was on a Quest, that I more or less accomplished, I think). Thank you for the beautiful pictures!! I had the blessing to live in Kingsclere for a few years in the late 80's(i'm from the usa). It was truly the most beautiful place in all the world - I loved all the surrounding villages too..........your pictures brought tears to my eyes - thank you!!
