Sitting on the high bluff between the two branches of Cook Inlet is the City of Anchorage. Boasting of half the population of the entire State of Alaska, Anchorage features a wonderful selection of sights and sounds, restaurants and shopping, and over 120 miles of paved trails; so be sure your Alaska travel plans include a visit to this one of a kind city.
In 1915 the town was established as railroad construction headquarters. Between the 1930s and the 1950s, Anchorage experienced massive growth as air transportation and the Military became increasingly important. The city suffered substantial damage in the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, with whole neighborhoods sliding into the bay. A resilient city, Anchorage is now the business and economic hub of Alaska, and a great base to start your Alaska Vacation.
During the summer months downtown Anchorage is decorated with over 100,000 hanging baskets and hundreds of little island flower gardens, giving downtown a vibrant splash of color.
