Back in October I had a chance to get my first photo of the Lesser Violetear. Well it wasn’t the first time I had photographed this bird but it was the first time it was officially named the Lesser Violetear. The last time I had photographed one of these it was called the Green Violetear. The taxonomists have been hard at work and have apparently determined that the northern birds were different enough from the southern birds that they were actually two different species.
This particular bird was photographed near a feeder in the mountains of Costa Rica. Several hummingbirds were visiting the feeder and one got a little too close resulting in an aggressive reaction. The violet feathers on the neck were raised to let the other birds know they were getting too close.
