Recon Platoon, 2/28 Inf.

Members of Recon Platoon visiting with kids in a village. SSG Mark Smith (top center) was later given a direct commission. As a Special Forces officer, CPT Smith was captured April 7, 1972 when the district compound at Loc Ninh was overrun by a task force including VC and NVA Regulars and supported by T-34 tanks. During a 3 day battle with heavy casualties on both sides, Mark Smith assumed command of the ARVN troops when their commander deserted. He was wounded in action at least twice and was taken prisoner after the compound was destroyed. He was held as a POW until 1973. CPT Smith was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and the Distinguished Service Cross for valor for his actions in defending the compound.

This photo was passed on to me and I don't know who to credit.
