Under the terms of the Army Student Nurse Program scholarship, I received E-3 pay and allowances for about a year and a half (it could have been up to two years, but I graduated mid-school year. In return, I had a 3 year active duty commitment. My plan was to spend my 3 years and then get out and look for a job in or near the Napa Valley, which would have made our moms happy. However, when I got near that juncture, I decided that I had better options for pay and education as an Army nurse. I had interesting assignments during my career and the Army paid for my grad school, but the tradeoff was the fact that the closest we got to home during my career was a 3-year tour at Ft. Ord.
