Thanks Debi and Lydia. Maybe these particular judges did not see scans as photographs, but if so, that is fairly unusual, as they are readily accepted in most photo comps. In fact, one of my scans recently was judged to be the best colour print in Australia, in the Australian Interstate comp (APS). See:

Julie, that is a really cool contest. I enjoyed looking at the different ideas people had from looking at exactly the same object. Really fascinating. I like your entry mroe than some of the finalists'. Could it be that the powers that be do not consider a scanned image a "photograph" ? Thanks for posting the link. ~Lydia

Thanks Maurice. It does look like that, doesn't it? This was taken as part of a competition run by Canon, where, for each entrant, Canon sent a box containing four items and the challenge was to make interesting images. http:/www.canon.com.au/photo5 This was my entry for the box section. It is interesting to see how competition subjects can extend our range of photography.

Nice, the narrow DOF, creates a bottomless box, which is intriguing and makes the dice look like they're floating... :)

Thanks Lydia, Kelly and Rod. Yes, this is a scanned image.

Interesting composition Julie and well done thinking out of the box using the scanner - assuming Rod's guess is correct. - Kelly

Julie does lots of great things by scanning the objects in on her scanner. I think this might be one of those. It looks really good a.

I like this, Julie. I wanted to do something like this with boxes layered (the dice are a great addition!), but couldn't think how to do it. You've done it excellently! ~lydia
