Nice shot, may I ask if its HDR ?, I have just done a few of the sage using HDR . As far as some of the other comments go.....well just ignore them, photographers have been post processing for years , its just got easier thats all. And the amount is down to personal preference just like any art form

No worries talking photography here David or better yet at the main thread. I don't have any direct references as I'm not much of a net surfer & I have to rely on my memory from the reading I did over 30 yrs ago. But I do remember Bill Brandt did a series from the north of England all in B&W showing the grime & hard work going on there. If you’re interested enough you should read & view the work of lot’s of the past greats & there may even be present day great photographer’s work you can look at. But if what you were after were nice sort of pretty post card shots then your options would be limited in the conditions you had on that day. That sort of weather is good for colour shots without the sky in or B&W & you could have concentrated on that. Even posted here we have had some great shots in rain hail & snow but if you’re not so interested in photography as an art form & just learn from internet forums, & from what I’ve seen they’re nothing more than mutual admiration societies & to them the post processing you did is just par for the course it seems along with frames & sigs:-)
If you keep away from the eye candy you can learn a thing or two at places like this but you won't learn a thing about photography by getting praise like you got for these three shots. If you had posted three picys from that drab day someone may have offered advice as to how you should have shot them & you could have learned something. Mind you, you won't learn bugger all from Paul:-)

Rod,

Fair comment - no argument with what you said about being able to take great photographs even when the light is flat and dull - but I don't have that level of skill (yet). Perhaps you could point me to an example that strikes you as being particularly good so I have a reference to learn from? [might be better to message me direct so we don't turn this challenge into a discussion forum!?] So, rather than get nothing from the day I got something - these images. I think you and I will never agree about PP and that's okay too.

David.

I do think these look really nice as graphics as you intended David but I take issue with you about why you said you had to do this.
You said the light was "typical North East England light - very flat, very dull and grey" I've seen plenty of great shots especially of a typical North East England scene in the lighting conditions you describe. So the remedy is for you to learn how to shoot good shots in that light rather than create graphics like this which require far less talent & skills. Nothing wrong in playing with graphics if you enjoy it, I do myself but graphics aren’t the answer to poor lighting, skill is:-)

Maybe to continue the water illusion, replace the fence with water in this pic too David as the other one turned out great. On the otherhand, this reminds me of the Jim Carrey movie "The Truman Show", where his life was all just part of a stage set. I changed my mind - leave it as is and call it the "Truman Show - part II"! ;-) CJ

You are right Dave, they look heavily PS'ed. But you must get full credit for turning them into something captivating. Good work mate.

Thanks for the comments on this and the 'submerged' Sage pic. Both are very obviously heavily photoshopped - deliberately so. I had set out that day to take some panos of the Newcastle/Gateshead quayside area - in the last 20 years it has changed out of all recognition (for the better). By the time I got there the light was just horrendous - typical North East England light - very flat, very dull and grey. The resultant images were pretty much so boring as to be unusable. I was determined to get something out of the day though and this is the result after some work in Photoshop. I'm not normally a fan of overly photoshopped images, but this one and the 'submerged' one I do actually quite like. PArt of the attraction is that they aren't pretending to be anything other than manipulated images and I think if you can accept that, it is possible to enjoy them. (I know many will hate them . . . Rod?).

Really like this one (David?). However, I think, and this is my personal opinion, that you went just a tiny bit overboard with PP. If it were my pic I would tone it down a bit. Again, that's just me.
