Thank you Pops. Your comment prompted me to explore different conversion procedures, and different settings. I could get a darker flower pettals with the channel mixer method, like in
but with the Fly's gradient map layer method I think it is more natural looking (thanks Lee!):

Beautiful flower. But if it's really red I'd like to see the petals of the flower much darker. That's my personal preference.
