Snake Dinner*

Often the photo you go for is not the photo you get.
I wandered down to the banana tree this evening to look for a last food shot
when I saw a five-foot snake lying in the bushes...possibly, stupidly, killed by a neighbor.
What was amazing was the huge swarm of flies that were already making a meal of him
and the incredible number of maggots that were working on the underbelly.

There is often a terrible beauty in the cycle of life, death
and redistribution for many of the world's animals.
Flies may not have the soaring grace of vultures, but they serve the same ends...
and here they look like dull emeralds and rough rubies while they're doing it.

Thanks, Julian, that's very kind. As for disturbing these guys, they were so focused on getting through that hide to the meat below that whenever I did have to make some major movement -- to avoid permanent cramping, for instance -- they flew away for about five seconds before returning. The main challenge, and the reason for so many shots, was the small depth of field (even on Av mode at f7.1) combined with the speedy flies coming, going and piling on top of one another. This shot was the closest to the "flower" that I was looking for. Fortunately I got it last night because I went out this morning to find that the neighborhood killer (I'm theorizing here) decided to dispose of the carcass. Perhaps he thought I was taking photos to turn over to the police.

This is indeed a great shot. I particularly like the colored fly bodies against the dark grey background. I surprises me that they stayed put when you came real close to take this macro shot.

Hi Pops... that's one of my beliefs as well... but in this case, I couldn't hold my breath for a thousand. :-)

Ah, I've always thought one of the secrets to good photography was take a thousands shots and throw away 999. 1 of 145 shots! Nice.
