J. R. Williams

Of all the requests for information and comments I receive, J.R. Williams and his cartoons, especially his Bull of the Woods cartoons, are among the most numerous.

Here's an interesting link to an individual, Michael McGrorty, who surveyed all six Algrove Bull of the Woods books for cartoons depicting shop injuries (turns out that 138 of the 847 cartoons qualified) and wrote a 2000-word essay entitled "Bandaged Humanity: Worker Injury in the 'Bull of the Woods' Cartoons of J.R. I have the exact Williams puzzle in really good condition. I this page is the only place I can find the puzzles. Anyone have some history on these?

Hi. I have a water color, framed, by Williams reg US Pat off. 1927 By Nea Service INC. It has his name printed with "28" under it The cartoon is entitled "Vanishing Americans". It depicts a cowboy who shot (or found a shot) mama coyote, with 4 babies running around ( and one is being held by the cowboy). From what I can understand about the poem that accompanies the water color print, is that the cowboy regrets the coyotes death but goes on to explain that they are a nuisance. I cannot find anything that closely resembles this print. Can you tell me anything about it? Thank you so much.

A friend just sent me several pages of copies of J. R. Williams cartoons. Most are dates i940 or 4l and are under the headline of Out Out Way--and the bulk o them--Born Thirty Years Too Late. But all of these drawing have a theme of the U.S. Army, ca the early l900s.
I found some info. on Williams on the net-but nothing about him having ever served in the U.S. Army.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has more information about this artist's interest in the turn-of-the-century military Also, what I was sent seem to be copies of cartoons printed in various newspapers--were these military theme cartoons ever published as a book-or as part of a book along with other Williams drawings. Thanks.

I've just found a scrapbook in some of my great aunt's things of pages of upon pages of JR Williams cartoons cut from the newspaper. My aunt's last name was Williams, but I don't believe her husband's name was JR. Can anyone tell me anything about him as a person and not just a cartoonist?

I'm looking for the cartoon by Williams that has a old geezer on a sidewalk walking past a white picket fence. A young'un (4 or so) dressed in cowboy dress has obviously drawn down on the old man. The old man has taken the young'un by the scruff of the neck and hung him on a peg of the fence. The caption is "Grandpa". Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this cartoon. It has been my favorite cartoon memory for 50 years.

I HAVE FRAMED CARTOON BY J R WILLIAMS DATED 1934 AND AUTOGRAPHED TO TOM H KUEEUE=IT SHOWS THE PARENTS WHO JUST LAYED A CARPET HAVENG THE BOY TRYING TO GET THE CARPET TACKS OUT FROM UNDER THE CARPET=IS THERE AMRKET FOR IT ?

I had a cartoon for years that depicted a school boy in a show and tell situation in a classroom. He was holding a poster with a drawing of a lathe and a stick man standing beside it. The caption said ( My dad is a machinist, see the machine, see my dad, see the metal being cut and cut and cut, see dad stand around.) Somewhere I lost that cartoon and I would very much like to find a copy of it. I also work as a machinist. Manual for years but now am in a CNC shop. Timeless humor for any one who ever worked as A manual machinist.

I don't recall that particular one off the top of my head, but if it was published then it's likely been reprinted in one of the recent Algrove books. Rather than buy all of the reprinted volumes (there are close to ten of them by now), you could write to Algrove directly and inquire. In the meantime, if I run across it, I'll scan a copy and send it to you.

Yes, me too. i used to sneak my dad's copy of "Cowboys Out Out Way" out of the book case and read it all the time. tThat's probably how it got to look so old, i wore it out.

As an apprentice machinist in 1941 I remember the J.R.Williams calandars with cartoons depicting work in a machine shop. Are there any of these calanders still available?
