A Winter's Day Walk On the Beach * Traveller

Hermosa/Manhattan Beach

I want to compete with Bruce, which is not to say that other people can't or are not gorgeously doing so...but more importantly, I want to impress Melbob who is, I suspect, a true Artist. I've worked hard on this for well over two intense hours....trying to be Turner/Degas-like? I don't know, but I know it's Art and I rest, thank God, rest at last.

Tomorrow is another day.

I like how the sea fades into the sky. Interesting palette.

Smoke signals, Indian smoke signals from out of and across my distant past...Tennessee, Arkansas, the wild open plains and the California coast, yes, smoke signals...white for peace. Best Wishes, Traveller

a 3 pixel smudge tool....!!! I'm familiar with that tool, of course, but I generally play with hardness and have never used such a small tool. Thanks for the tip....I shall think on it, but I'm a little busy with work at the moment...no rest for the wicked...lol Thanks again, Traveller (but thanks more for understanding that...it is my creation. I am always very gentle with my comments because it may be what the person intended, (and there is no absolute right or wrong in this...see my asking Lonnit to straighten her smoke stack in Cloud Machine...hey, really, it's her decision)

Hi Trav, I've been watching the comments with interest. The issue of 'credibility' always seems to be important ie:as you explained, 'designed to draw one's eyes to that area...' which it certainly does... but, because the smoke stops abruptly with such a contrast, this becomes a point of concern.

I remember Victor's comment on my 'smoking gun' ... "smoke does not do that!"

I like using the 'smudge' tool (aka Blur tool >> Right click ... choose smudge tool from the tool palate)... and if you set your brush size to 3 pixels, zoom into the end of the smoke you can sweep that smoke into a blend with the surrounding 'smog' which was created by emmissions from those stacks.

If you then follow with a brush size of say.. 9 pixels you can produce a very credible fade into the background and yet keep the impact of the white smoke for 99% of its expanse.

Not saying you should do this, just suggesting a possible 'compromise' that might be easier for some to accept, or as you so rightly expressed, 'Artist's intention' is important.

Great that you are enjoying the 'artistic' approach to photography and are prepared to work through the wide range of views that this approach invites. Regards Bob.

Dearest PK: Because of your writing on this I have at least tried to cut it down a degree or so...I have two new versions sitting on PS right now...and yet, and yet...lol... it is the artist's decision for better or worse.

I really appreciate your commenting on this.

Yes, yes...I know...
You did succeed in your intents...I am just wondering if the white isn't a bit "over-the-top"...Can't make my mind, still...

Dear PK:

As to my...white, white....whiff of smoke in Winter's Walk...I have indicated that I thought that something distinct in that Sea of Pastel was needed to fix the eye and then it could wander from there across the rest of the picture.

But...it is also a purely Painterly Touch...purposefully put there to take this outside of the realm of Photography...kind of a stark reminder that this is something else, while remaining yet a photograph.

Tension, betwix this and that, intentionally done....lol

Best Wishes,

Traveller

Generally very effective...I really can not make my mind about the almost glowing-white smoke...

Wonderful!!! Mr. T, Now you cannot claim that you can't PS! That's BS!
I am noticing that somehow this challenge is also lending itself for "indrustrial strength processing" :) I am seeing some great PP here.

Okay, I've given this another 45 minutes. Small Stuff, taking out the half distinct power towers on the hill, some specks, and enhanced the second smoke stack after neatimage. I kind of liked the pointillism of the initial go...but the added smoothness is nice also and should print better. Best Wishes, Traveller

Thanks for all the positive feed-back. I've run this through NeatImage tonight, mainly for printing, but I also applied it to the new posted version. Oddly, the 2nd smoke stack in the distance seems to be less distinct now...a little foggy as it were. I may play with this again. Best Wishes, Traveller

Trav, you've done a terrific job with what I would have seen as a throwaway. Definitely the artist's eye at work.

Mel, I thought about blending the smoke more also, but I think the eye needs something distinct to fix on in an essentially soft pastel canvas. Gotta go to work...Best Wishes, Traveller

Wow Traveller I am impressed, this is beautiful. I can see that you have put in the hours on this one and brought out the detail.

This would make a lovely wall hanging.

You could play with the hue to suit one's personal preference but I love it the way it is. I like the way you picked out the chimney smoke like it has been done with oils, some may wish to blend it more but again I like what you have done.

Traveller you have great skills and sometimes don't give yourself enough credit... so when can I come take some lessons please?

Regards Melbob
