Glass chess sets are fun for photos.

Placed on my lightbox (which has daylight color temperature)
and shot using tungsten white balance on the camera.

I hope I'm not offending anyone with the title.

Canon EOS D60 ,Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX Fisheye
1/50s f/5.6 at 15.0mm iso200 full exif

Angela, that's what I thought (no extra blurring), knowing your shooting style, but still was surprised to see such shallow DOF at f/5.6. For comparison I shot this at f/5.0 with the same lens, but I guess your point of focus is even closer and hence the narrower DOF.http://www.pbase.com/olafdk/image/53122835

Thanks, Olaf! Nope, no extra blurring. This is pretty much straight out of the camera (I love messing around with incorrect white balance and color temperature). Anyway, just a little curves to bring out more contrast and a little USM. The checker/chessboard patter comes from the glass chess board that is part of my chess set. It's a frosted glass and clear glass combination, so the darker squares are frosted glass and the lighter squares are the clear glass. I am really pleased with this shot because it came out pretty much exactly as I'd planned it in my head prior to shooting.

Great shot in every way! The Sigma 15mm fish is a great lens for this kind of close up of small objects... Did f/5.6 leave such a narrow DOF - or did you blur extra in post? How did you achieve the checkered pattern on your lightbox?

Perfect DOF. The composition leads the eye right from the bottom of the image to the top. Cool shot AJ!

I love how the DOF simulates the "Fog of War" over the pieces in the background. It adds so much to the shot. Just brilliant. --Jason

Very nice sharp piercing cold crystal of the in-focus elements juxtaposed with the overall ambiance created by the out-of-focus elements. -Michael

Really? Want some help picking up the pieces? *wink*

Excellent choice of title. The shallow DOF and skewed angle add drama. Must admit, I would never have thunk this was yours. I thought I had your style all figured out and now my whole belief system has been shattered. --Mr. Biscuit
