The Purpose of All Paper...Is To Bleed *

This project almost gave me giggle fits. It took forever for the knife suspended by a single strand of thread to stop moving, twisting forever hither and fro. Because there was a piece of paper stuck on the end of the knife, it wasn't till a full day later that I realized that the knife would never stop moving...it was my mere presence in the room that made it twist so.

Dorys, thanks for the defense, the picture IS 4 seconds of shutter time. However, I think that Andy's criticism is legitimate also, “Did this need to be a long exposure?” In some sense the answer is no. However, these things evolve...and in that sense this image belongs in the Challenge. Initially this was to be an Angela Johnson kind of PWL, except on a large version of La Primavera I have by Botticelli...I was going to paint the three figures of the muses with light and see what happens. However, unlike Vikas's PWL of Beer, he at least got a strikingly pretty picture...I just got a picture of a picture. It was interesting, but so what? Still, one of the faces of the Muses had a certain startled look and I thought of Sergio in the last Challenge and tried to paint in a knife, coming from off-stage right. This didn't work at all. Remembering the last challenge again and my rather tiresome insistence on the importance of titles & thinking one of my more felicitous phrases has been, "People bleed on paper when the write. They bleed their feelings and longings and even their secrets long kept deep." So now I had a title and a knife...what I needed was a trail of blood that takes about 4 seconds to run the length of the paper. This is how this image happened. It is not nearly as good as most people's here, but it is what it is...and this is how it came to be. Best Wishes, Traveller

Andy-it needs a long exposure to be eligible for this challenge. :-) Traveller- I like the concept. I like you sharing how incredibly patient you are. I think I like the lower shot better without the crop on the paper. I'm wondering, however, how much more impact the shot would have with a different colored paper from the background??

Traveller, in commenting on this topic i find myself asking the question "does it need a long exposure". Whilst the image and concept are excellent, i don't think i can answer "yes" to that question. Andy

(I hope this works) My preferred image is here: But because of the constant movement and the requirement of a 4 second shot, the paper in this version really isn't in focus. Such is the work of these challenges.
