There was an interesting documentary on this phenomenon. If I remember correctly, the current theory is that sometimes this area floods, and the water freezes in the top layer. When high winds come during these conditions, blocks of ice, holding the rocks firmly, are blown like sails across the flat mud.
Excellent subject for this category and a well-captured image. I think I'd have changed perspective, though, so the trail wasn't going straight down the middle of the picture. -- Victor
