Nature's Geometry - Man's Design

This is the TGV-station (TGV = high speed train) at the airport of Lyon, France. Designed by Calatrava, an architect/engineer whose trademark is nature-inspired structures like this one.

Thank you Michael! An old shot, not technically perfect (blown highlights - tough exposure on slide-film), but I felt it was a good example leading lines: the railing leading the eye into the picture to the main subject over the lower roof line, passing the tall black steel structure, up to the back edge of the organic roof, which in turn leads the eye back to the front of the main structure. At least that is how I see it. I remember going out of my way to get this composition, while everyone else was heading back to the tour-bus (taken during a field-trip while I was still in architecture school), so I had to work quickly...

Geez, Olaf, this image is so rich in line that I'm almost on overload. Broad sweeping lines serve to establish the form while other lines serve to make up the detail. It's a fabulous image.

By the way, have you ever heard Michael Nyman's "MGV"? It is music which was written for the inauguration of the Northern European TGV Train Line. Minimalist in style, the music immediately popped into my mind when I saw this image. -Michael
