On "Day One" of the Blogger BioBlitz, we decided to count everything of interest that we saw along
the trail during our walk through the Black Ance Road - McParlan House Trail part of the park.

Wayne - Thanks! Ironwood is also sometimes called Hop Hornbeam up here too. You remembered well.. the tree you call Ironwood is Blue Beech up here. In R.C. Hosie's "Trees of Canada", he states that O. virginiana "is used locally for tool handles and other purposes where a strong tough wood is required." He also mentioned that up to the turn of the century, the wood was used for runners on sleighs -- which would definitely require tough wood!

That's a great compendium of observations, Bev. The snapping turtle is quite a coup, and the painted turtle is no small matter either, no less your rescue of it. Your Ostrya virginiana , which we also have down here, is what we call "hophornbeam", and has quite shaggy bark - it startled me quite a bit to hear it called "ironwood" (but we know how perverse common names are). What we down here in Georgia call "ironwood", and which is present here in huge abundance, is Carpinus americana . It has extremely smooth bark and a very muscular appearance. I'm recollecting from one of your posts awhile back, but I think you called it "Blue Birch" or "Blue Beech", can't remember which. Does O. virginiana have extremely hard wood too? Now to register.
