Azure-winged Magpie is a "new" endemic species to the Iberian peninsula. Used to be called in latin Cyanopica cyana distributed in western part of the Iberia peninsula and in the far east, in China with a big gap in the distribution in between. It was believed that the presence in Spain and Portugal was ought to an introduction by an ancient comercial transport trought the silk route comming from China. Now after finding some fossil bones in Gibraltar and some DNA studies, the results are that the birds in China and in the Iberian peninsula are very different genetically ought to several thousands of years of separation. So the birds in Iberia must be called Cyanopica cooki and in the east C. cyanea. The new hipothesis is that the presence of Azure winged Magpie was all over the Paleartic and some of the last glaciations left the two populations in the two extrems of the Paleartic.
