Sean McGraw with Robert at AKA Records in Philadelphia (August 1st, 2004)

"On August 1, 2004 thanks to my friend Matt, I was able to briefly meet and speak with Robert. The meeting took place at AKA Records. I formally introduced myself and my wife Kim to Robert and told him that night’s show would be my 25th lifetime attendance at a Cure show (if you want the list send me an Email sometime). He asked if I had any requests for the night - Kim and I both asked for “Plainsong” (track 1 from Disintegration). He indicated he would do it and asked if I had any other requests. I then asked if he could play “Faith”. It is a song in which the words speak for itself. Robert said “that might be a bit tricky.”

The Cure opened their show at The Tweeter Center with “Plainsong”. The second song in the encore at the end of the night was indeed “Faith”. Needless to say, this was a very memorable day. It is these kind of events that make Remains and all that music stuff I do worthwhile."

So for no reason in particular I am going over this pic and my comments from almost 3 yrs ago....God I am so full of it! Can it Seany, will ya??!! Still one of my coolest memories ever though, up there with the 13 gigs I did this past month. Also, I look a little bloated. Looking forward to some shows in '07!!!

Fleur, I'm a little out there sometimes, and certainly a creative, somewhat insightful, and very loyal person but never have been described as dork-like in any manner........so do I thank you for your originality or were you simply commenting on a bit of technical deficiency? That I will admit (the technically deficient thing), but I'm trying to keep up with it all.

As for Robert, never have thought of him as a vampire. I just think of him as a guy with an impeccable business & stage sense who goes down in my book as one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Sean, that's actually funny about the camera thing, because when I met Robert
he made fun of our digital cameras. And the ironic thing is, some of the pictures
I took with him did not come out well at all.

But I think that's because Robert is actually a vampire, not because we are technophobic
dorks.

Lynn, I hear you. That comment of mine regarding getting pics with rock stars was not to slag off anyone like you. Not at all. It's just my own slight personal confliction of having a picture taken with someone who you want to be sure that they know how much you appreciate them and not just for a status thing. So again, not directed at you or anyone really, except maybe paparazzi slugs or those who live vicariously through others while not getting what it's really all about. Any of those people whould most likely not be crawling around on this site, so hope that clears it up.

Sean, I think it's great that you got to meet Robert. However, I'm not sure all people that get to meet and take pictures with him are all about "I got to meet a rock star." For me, my picture with all of the guys is something so precious to me. The fact that I got to spend even a little time saying hello and taking pictures with five guys that have done so much for me through their music is priceless. It was never about "look who I took a picture with." For the most part I'm glad I have them because I have to keep looking at them to make sure it really happened because it's still so surreal. I can't speak for anyone else, but that's the story behind my reasons for wanting pics.

Yes, it was awesome that he asked for and played the tunes requested, Ms. or Mr. Guest. Thanks for your well wishes. He was very cool and I guess he figured it was the least he could do for someone whose been trolling up and down the East Coast on every tour since '89. I was a bit conflicted about throwing this pic over to Craig and the site being that it really was a personal highlight to be able to speak frankly with such a musical influence. I've seen posts on here before where people they would rather have a conversation with him or them or whatever - and I totally see that point - but how can you have an important conversation with someone who does not know you personally? So, when the opportunity arose we took our shot and just hoped that a genuine affection for the music, the band, and the artist would somehow get through. It's not all about "I got my picture with a rock star" blah blah blah, althugh there it sits above for you all to see so maybe just a slight hint of hypocrisy there I guess. I am human, you know. But as stated in the above caption, obviously it was a worthwhile journey. I think I can say with confidence he genuinely appreciates the die-hards. Wouldn't you?

By the way, in the pic I am rambling to him about how great Interpol had been on the three previous Curiosa shows I had seen. Robert's response: "fantastic." One other quick story about this meeting: originally Kim and I were both set up with Robert and this promo guy Dan was taking our pic, but the camera would not go off. Robert grabbed the camera, held it up, and took a picture of promo guy Dan and said "how come everybody here can make this camera work except you"? Busted his chops, he did. Any Philly person's gotta love that! Anyway, that's when Kim just grabbed the camera and snapped off the shot aforementioned and above-centered photograph.

That is awesome that he asked for your requests and then honored them :) Happy to hear you had such a great time.
