The town where San Francesco (St. Francis) was born in 1182. He shunned the rich life that was available to him as the son of a wealthy cloth merchant and went on to live a life of chastity and poverty. San Francesco founded the Frati Minori (Franciscans) and the Ordine delle Clarisse (Female Franciscans). This town is very beautiful, very clean, very accessible and truly a pleasure to visit. We stayed the night in Spello, another hill town about eight kilometers away and enjoyed the town thoroughly.
