Build in 1926, Waverly is a very large run down and vandalized, spooky tuberculosis hospital that closed down in 61'. It turned into a retirement home/mental retardation center until 1980 and has stood barren ever 21 years. It was last bought by somone who planned to clear the area and build the largest statute of Jesus in the world I hear, but funds fell through and now it sits.

We just did an overnight tour with just 8 people. Tina and Charlie live there. They were absolutely wonderful to us. I did tell her that the staff we encountered at the haunted house were very rude though. She didn't seem very happy with that. We encountered a ball rolling around by its self and we have seceral evps along with pics. I was nudged and one of the guys that was with us turned around to see a huge man standing behind him. He was very freaked out and when Tina asked what the man looked like he described him. She told him that he saw the ghost of the homeless man that was murdered and thrown down the elevator shaft to the 3rd floor along with his dog. She had seen him too. That place is definitely haunted. We are planning another overnight trip next year. We got lucky this yr when we went because it was the worse storm ever including the thunder and lightning. You couldn't have asked for a better night. Tina and Charlie are working really hard to restore the building. It isn't the easiest thing to do to get through all the red tape.

The scariest thing I've ever evcountered on that hill was a family of skunks. We used to go up on the fire escapes and take pictures with a poloroid, ride our bikes all over that hill. Spent a ungodly thunderstorm in the death tunnel and countless hours in the old separate hospital that burned down. Made a home movie up there once. If there are mean spirits in that building they got reason to be mad seeing all the destruction.

waverly hills has changed alot , i remeber 1999 i snuck up there with a bunch of friends we got scared out by voices , then security gards lol . man its amazing waverly had no windows and all coverd with grafiti , its insane of how it is now . and dont be callin tina that , shes a very nice person unlike you .

I'll be visiting on June 8th, very excited. We will be doing the 2 hour tour at 10:00, then we will be back at midnight to spend the night till 8 a.m. Anyone have any advice as to where the good spots are, or where the most activity is? Can't wait to see waverly in person!

I went there over the summer. It was amazing. The building is huge. It's got a gothic kinda castle look to it. There's no special way to explain it in words, you just have to see for yourself, its for sure worth the money and the time. You get a sad feeling of just knowing how many people died there and how many of them were suffering, most of them were probably wishing to die. TB is a horrible sickness. My trip to waverly hills was rather like a lesson. Me and my friends had planned to do a 2 hour Tour which started at 8:00. We had to be there At 7:30 for parking and signing in. We watched A video which was part of the 2 hours, (they didn't Mention this to me when I ordered my ticket). The Video was about 30mins long and it showed a Episode of ghost hunters and then the owners daughter And her friends goofing off which I didn't wanna see. This was cutting into MY TIME AND MY 22 BUCKS I PAYED TO TOUR THIS PLACE! So after to nonsense video, we divided Into about 20 people into two groups. Our side started out in The basement which led us to the first floor (morgue). Then After that we went on to the rest of the floors and they loaded Our minds with bullshit about how this happend here and The nurse died here. I didn't come here to listen to people Tell me lies. I came here to seek pararnormal. I enjoyed getting To view the buliding, but I didn't enjoy the employees. They were Rude and they wouldn't answer questions. Also we ran into the Other group like 2 times. And if your woundering if I seen anything I DIDN'T AT ALL. THIS PLACE IS NOT HAUNTED AND THE PEOPLE THAT RUN THIS PLACE SHOULD GET IN TROBLE FOR FAULSE ADVERTISING. "Scariest place on earth" haha NOT!!! More like dumbiest place on Earth. I don't blame there daughter for not ever coming back. I'd be inbarressed. They don't use the money to restore the buliding. They pay there own bills with it.

I've been to waverly a few times. Its a really cool place to visit, but the staff there are really rude. They didn't have much respect. When I called to even order the tickets they were rude. I think if there going to run a public fling the owners need to choose better employees. My friends was even afraid to ask questions about the place because they was afraid they'd get there head bit off. To be honest if I go back I'm going to bring a ipod to listen to so I don't have to hear the bullshit lies that they make out of the place.

I think it would be so kool if tina and charlie Mattingly (owners) would restore the whole Buliding the way it was when it open as a tb Hospital. Make it look just like it did in the 1920's. The reason I'm saying this is because when I looked at the picture from different Webistes it looked so beautiful. I wasn't alive When the building was open and running. To me waverly hills is a pieace of Art. I love looking at pictures and Reading about the history and Hearing peoples (real) experences. I don't think they should turn it into A bed and breakfast, its not known For that, its known as a tb hospital And it should stay that way. There's Young people that haven't got to Explore it and if its turned into a Hotel then they'll miss the experience. I've been a few times and I had a awesome Feeling. I felt free and open. Its really like A peacefull place. I would have loved To go when it was still open as a "home" To people. My thoughts and feelings go Out to all the tb paitents at waverly hills And I hope that there spirts are there because They are home and they know that home Is were you make it. Hey. My name is breonna, I live 2 hours from waverly hills. I have visited there 4 times this year. I know that's a lot of Gas. Anyways when I first heard of WHS I was like noway! This place seemed so kool! So I told my friends and my Cousins about it and they were all as stoked as I was. Now Our next move was to go. So a few months later We all loaded up in one SUV and we were louisville bound. We booked a 2 hour tour. We arrived, we had to be there at 7:30p.m. we parked our vehicle and went to the laundry room Aka gift shop. Our tour was suppose to start at 8:00 and from What I understood this meant we was in the building at 8:00. But that didn't happen, we had to watch a video that's lasted Like 30 mins! And yes that time cut into our tour. So after the Video they broke us up into two groups. Our group started off In the buliding and other group started off in the body chute. They gave us a bunch of rules which I understood because it Is a huge building and someone could get hurt. Anyways.... We start our tour and basically it is all blah blah blah this Happend here, this did this here, and if you asked a question, They wouldn't even give you a good answer. So we continue On and we get to the 4th floor and take a smoke break! WTF? Then we go on and they blah blah somemore. Then they make You turn off every light and they say that there is shadow People! Haha NOT. Its your eyes playing tricks on ya! And I Was standing there and I was like "I'm gonna pretend to see Something" and I was like OMG I just seen a body figure and The tour guide goes "OHH YEAH ME TOO!!" Haha can you say bogus! Over all 2 hour is horrible! Don't waste your time or money. Now The overnight is the shiznit! It is way cooler.

A great place to see. The 2 hour tour is great with history. I also did the 8 hour overnight stay. I was alone 75% of the night, it seemed like a very peaceful place. I relaxed and almost took a nap on the Morgue Tray for 40mins, sat on the embalm tables, and took a rest on the wooden Electric Shock Table too. Searched in every room that held the extremely sick to mod-sick people, checked out the childrens play room, the kitchen/freezer vaults, bathroom showers/tubs etc. again very calming place...no spirits/ghosts. No odd pictures, evp voices or odd emf readings. The body shoot is also a interesting thing to see that's located outside of the building where they tossed the bodies down to later load up on the train who died of TB etc. Ghost Hunters + Ghost Adventures TV shows are full of crap! There TV shows, they need to keep ratings high to have a show and need to show its haunted to makes ca$h+keep there tv show on air = $ the route of all evil :> j/k But truely there TV shows and they had to make up 99% of there crap...evps etc. I've been there twice overnight and know a few friends that had parties there when it was an abandon building back in the days. ....and there was nothing there then or now. If you go, you'll scare yourself if anything into the hype or being in the dark. Plus the owners are keeping the place alive (vs being torn down) by making money on the history and on the so called "Its haunted", which is a good thing because they need to make $ to remodel, pay taxes etc. haunted = NO! good history and fun = YES! Again see the place if your going through KY, pay for a tour or stay, buy a Waverly Hills postcard, jacket, tshirt, coffee mug, flashlight, handbag etc! Help support the history :> hehe

The place also runs a seasonal Haunted House during Halloween time too. The 2-hr history tour is cool, overnight stay is fun too. There is a 4-hr friday night and 8-hr saturday night stay. There future plans when they make enough money is to turn the place into a hotel or apartments. Seems like it'll be many years from now, my guess is 10-20 years seeing how the place is so trashed. Again don't be scraed of the dead, there dead. Be scared of the living. The serial killers, odd people and other weirdos out there in the world are the ones to watch out for! The people who will kill for fun, rape, steal, snatch your kids etc etc. Also watch out for the nice guys, those are the poeple that want your trust and then turn your life/family/world upside down. Guest, You said that the tunnel was used so that patients in the hospital wouldn't see the dead ones, that's not entirely true, it wasn't so they wouldn't see the dead people, it was so they wouldn't see how MANY were dead. And you don't know that they didn't used to store dead bodies down there in the early days, I mean, were you even alive in the 1920's? I know I wasn't. And that other guy who talked about his girlfriend being possessed may actually be telling the truth. Don't be so quick to judge. Also, not that many people survived and not all of them died from the disease, that's pretty obvious. Just saying.

That said, in reading some of the posts it seems some people think this was a place people dropped off their sick loved ones and forgot about them. This was not the case, these people were in one of the best hospitals in the world for the 1920's and many walked out the front doors cured! Someone asked why bodies were 'stored' in the so-called death tunnel, they weren't... it was used to move supplies and coal and later the man running the hospital thought it would be best for the moral of the patients to not see the ones who died so they used the tunnel to move the gurneys (with an overhead pulley system). so they were on the other side of the hill out of sight.

The movie was NOT a documentary, though it is about the place. It's telling parts of the history along with a good ghost story. I don't know if the things in the movie actually happened or not, but it does make a good movie. I'm planning on going there soon. I like the scary haunted places. I haven't been able to go yet, but I plan on it. What you should do is read the history about the place and then watch the movie. You'll have a new view on it. Just knowing that this place is really out there and is filled with souls of people who may or may not have moved on. -Taylor Moon

Most people that hear about thing this are just into it For the thrill. But if you go to waverly hills, I think you Would be more interested in the history. It is way better Than the thrill... trust me. I went to the amazing place back In 2007. I had heard about the place from a show called travel Channel. As soon as I seen the stuff they seen and talked about I Knew I was going. I seen shadows and someone or something tugged On my hair. But overall everyone should go.

I went to waverly last year of 09 and i seen full body portions, shadows, and blinking lights that didn't have elctric hooked up in the room. Waverly is a very interesting place and it changed my thoughts of ghost, i know do believe. everyone should go and experience it for themselves.

My Grandfather was there and died about 1929 at the age of 30 yrs. old. I never knew him and my mother only knew what she was told. We have never been able out much because all the living members of the family either don't know or don't want to talk about it. The best that we can come up with is that he died there and his body was one of the so many that where piled up and buried somewhere. We can not find a death notice of any kind on him. My mother in her later late tried to find out more and after her death I promised to find out where he is. I have been working on this for about 6 yrs. now without much luck. The records from waverly hills has a William Thompson listed but he is not my grandfather. I know at one time there was someone trying to identify some of the remains, if anyone knows who this is just let me know or if the is any way I could find out more.

I am doing a report on the restoration efforts which I plan to forward on to the owners. As I live in GA there is no way I can just pop in and go on a tour to see for myself what they have done. All I can say from the photographs is that the restoration efforts are severely compromising the historic integrity of the site. Who puts vinyl windows in a historic building? It may be a funhouse for paranormal investigators but a historically accurate representation of a former TB facility seems to be unimportant to the owners. Maybe I'm wrong. I contacted the office and they were extremely rude to me when I inquired about past and future restoration efforts and emailing Tina yielded no response. Does anyone know what of the original buildings still stand besides the huge main hospital complex? The original hospital was built in about 1910 and I can't tell if it or any of the other buildings like the Dr's Mansion still stand. Love the site. The black n white pictures are wonderful. I have a favorite I think it is number 2962 at the bottom. It looks like an old boiler room. I see a big metal round storage tank in the back. Pay close attention to the light beaming down on what looks like an old bed. Very cool picture. I will be visiting waverly on Mar.27th for the 2hr tour and hope to get some good pictures.

Me and about 8 friends stayed overnight in August of 2008. We were sad that we did not really see or hear anything. We have several pictures of "orbs" but I do not really trust those since more than likely it is just dust or water in the air. Very creepy ld building I do have to say. And even though we were warned not to "taunt" the ghosts, after about 7 hours of nothing we all began to trash talk, still got nothing. I would love to go back, but am interested in other places before going back to somewhere that nothing was seen.

Hello, My name is Berry. I live in louisville and in 1989 myself and 8 friends were in the sanitorium. We had broken in many time and had many many experences!In 89 was the last time i was there. I was on the therd floor and something bumped me and i fell 3 storys threw the elevator shaft! when i hit i blacked out and with the help of my friends i got to the hospital. I hit concreat and barley missed a bunch of scrap metal that would have killed me forsure! i have all the recordes to prove my story is true

Before the Mattingly's purchased the property, it was to be a reverenced place where people could come for spiritual and mental healing. My grandmother sent her 21 year old son from 100 miles away…only to never see him alive again. I have spent many days and nights there and, of course, Halloween and there are NO SPIRITS, NO GHOSTS AND NO HAUNTINGS....only in people's imaginations. What a shame!!!! It is a shame the Mattingly's have destroyed a man's reputation all over the Internet with a LIE about the property they purchased, by mortgaging their homes. The previous owner did nothing to undermind the property for insurance purposes as the Mattingly's have stated...as the previous owner NEVER CARRIED INSURANCE ON THE PROPERTY. He did not know the dirt was removed around the building by one of his workers until he returned from out of town. You don't destroy a man's reputation with an outright lie to make yourself look good.

yeah this place is haunted no doubt, i live near the waverly. in the apartments down from the hill. i lived there since i was 9, an not only is the hospital haunted n scary but so is the apartments where i live. i also believe that spirits roam n haunt the apartments near them as well, me myself i have had my own experinces. at the waverly n in my home,the weird thing is i would of thought someone would want to ask people who live near it have they had experinces in their home but noone ever has. i think they should. like beyond waverly.. so people can tell sum of their storys about people who has live right by it. u would be surprised the stories that i or resdinces that live near by it.

I just seen this place on a the Travel Channel, a show about haunted places. I know how to get to Louisville but how do you find this place? How often do they do tours? I have also been on the tour of WHS several times. Very interesting. The tour starts in the "laundry room" located next to the actual hospital. They have books,dishes, and other things from the actual hospital. Very interesting!!!! Well worth the money.

I live 2 miles from Waverly. In high school we always go up there. That was in 1998 at the time they did'nt have security. I drive pass it daily. As an adult I am looking forward to going back to go on an actual tour.

a few friends and I went a couple years ago. We walked through the tunnel and it was the creepiest thing ever. My friend, Derrick, went to hold a hand that he felt next to him and when he went to grab it, it wasnt there. Also, we heard footsteps behind us but when we turned around no one was there. "People" brushed past a couple of my other friends and that's when we deicded to leave. It really is a scary place to visit.

i watched when ghost hunters were there investigating and i saw some of the things they saw all the times they have been there and i believe it is haunted and if i ever get to kentucky i plan on asking around and see if there is any chance i can go there and see for myself also in illinois there is the old state hospital in bartonville illinois and it is haunted also along with the cemetary where the patients are buried and when i went there i had a feeling of being watched and got goose bumps and chills and i wanted to leave but i stuck around and still had the feeling of being watched i do believe in ghosts and hauntings

went a few years ago and nothing happened, one of the guides tricked us in trying to see shadow people, by using a eye trick, the place is creepy but it is over sensationalised. If I didn't live 30 minutes from it I wouldnt travel great distances to see it. Also all my photos had "orbs" in them which is just dust reflecting the flash of the camera as a mirror affect, that is all it is don't let someone tell you different.

Dee My husband and I went on a 2 hour tour at Waverly Hills in late August this year. While on the fourth floor I experienced something walk past me (between me and the wall, only about a 2 foot area) I felt the breeze as it passed. I thought a real person had just walked by. When I turned my head to see who it was all that was there was something that looked like a black shadow as it passed me. Also my left arm became very very cold.

3 friends and I went there during the night about 12 yrs ago, as that was the thing to do when i was a teenager. There used to be a gaurd watching for kids like us and the thing was to NOT get caught, which we didnt. There was a guardshack with a light AND tv in it, could that be were the lights and flashes are coming from, hmm?? We did not see anything crazy, but yes, the building is really creepy! At that time, ALL the windows were busted out, all the walls had graffiti, and some doors were missing it seemed. The elevator doors were open, and the most of the little doors in the morgue were missing or hanging by one hinge, but the padded room doors seemed to be somewhat in tact. I would not go back myself but cant keep myself from the shows on Waverly since I grew up in Louisville. A few yrs ago it was opened to the public for a short tour for holloween. I do know that you can have scheduled tours around the building and overnight stays.

I know all about disproving orbs and am VERY skeptical about them, but what I caught had a definite path and could not be lit by any source. I have caught "orbs" on digital photography which I have always disproved, but this one on video was very unexpected and strange.

The owners are using all of the funds raised to restore the facility and turn it into a hotel/bed and breakfast. The plan is to restore it to what it looked like when it was new. They will keep the 4th floor as it is today for ghost hunting. Should be a very interesting place to stay. They have already done a lot to clean the place up. If you see it today that have a lot of the graffiti removed and new windows are in place throughout the 1st floor.

As a child in the late 1950 - 1960s, Waverly hills was my playground. I knew every trail around the grounds and would spend all day and occasionally many late evening playing or ridding my horse around the area. I have seen more than my share of strange occurances there. After the place was closed, my friend and I would play inside and in the nurses building and what was then called the Negro Hospital. [later burned down] What people don't realive is that there was several tunnels under the hospital, I know because I playd in them. The current owner does not want this know because they are afraid someone may try to find them [insurance worries] There was not a place in there that I did not know and I enjoyed sitting around back at the delivery area chatting with nurses and other employees who would tell me stories about things that happened in there. Some would make your hair curl. I visitd the hospital a few years ago and was saddened by how torn up it was. It would make such a grand hotel, complete with ghost. That would be one way to raise money to fix it up. Fix up a few rooms and rent them out.

My name is Ashley and i'm 17 years old. I have a huge passion for the paranormal and recently visited Waverly hills. WOW. This place is a MUST GO. The pictures we have, the sounds we heard and what we saw is beyond explainable. The most frequent activity was definitely the 4th and 5th floor. You'll probably only understand this if you have been there before, but down some hallways there are double doors. Some open and some have one door closed. Well we were walking down, (i forget which floor) but one door was open and the other was closed. As we got close it SLAMMED and I couldn't believe what I had heard. Also the most disturbing was the constant pacing of this one single shadow on the fourth floor. It kept pacing back and forth almost in a circle. If you don't believe me now, be my guest and go see it for yourself. It was AMAZING!

i wanna go vist WHS so bad, it looks so kul. its crazy how many stories you hear about that place, you wanna know if it did happen or not. room 502 i hear diff stories about the room, the nurse who killed herself. i dont think noone really knows what happen or why she did it or it even happen. it makes it more scary! alot of ppl died there they still need help, its sad really sad. they should not tear it down, they should fix it up, put pics/letters/stories about the place, cuz this was a history. ppl who lost there lives.. but still there waiting for some help.

About two years ago I visit waverlyhills for halloween and I enjoyed it I will come again. I was born in 1969 My mom and I had touch of tb we both had to take medication for it. Now when I go get a tb done I have to get exray instead of the shot. Also I love that we did have something like this to help people out. I like hearing and going to hauted places I really like to take a real tour of the property.

I went April 19, 2008 for the overnight tour! It was crazy! Had a great time! Saw some crazy stuff, Shadow people, I must say the 4th floor was the most activity, At one point my friend Chris and myself had to get the hell off that floor, Just felt like someone was watching us and wanted us to leave! We got some real good video and pics!! Took some EVP's I have to listen to them first! 8 hours in this place was BAD ASS!!! I'm going back soon for the overnight again!! This place is no joke! Thanks to the Waverly Hills Staff and tour groups! Really nice people!

About four of my friends and i want to go here, but do you have to have a scheduled tour? Can you just walk up there at night? We have been to tons of places all over indiana and some in Ill. but having a tour of the place is never as fun a just going by yourselves. A group of us are thinking of planning a trip to Waverly, but do not want to be guided the whole time. Has anyone been on the half night visits? Is it worth the $50 and do you have access to any floor. My brother was paid a visit in our basement one night from a little girl and a woman. Scared him so bad he moved out soon after. So I wonder if what he saw may have come from Waverly? you have to call the waverly society to schedule a visit they get booked up FAST. search for waverly on google and it will pull it up. i've been there and i don't think they should refurbish it either. i saw some of the renovations and they were okay but it will kill out the spookiness.

I commend the owners on wanting to maintain the building for postarity, but unless it threatens the overall structural integrity of the building, it should be left as is. This is what it was and what it has become. The whole appeal of the place. As Ashley said....if completely restored, it just becomes another building (with a past). We are going to visit soon. My wife doesn't want to, but she's going....just doesn't know it yet. lol

I think Waverly Hills should be restored to its former beauty. Why not make it a resort hotel and gift shop, with a museum. Special rooms could be used as ghost rooms for people wanting to spend the night on a floor alone. Louisville or Jefferson County could fill the bill and it would be great for tourism. You could have a Charity Masquarade Ball on Hallows Eve. It would be great. Think outside of the box people.

Waverly Hills isn't that creepy. I used to visit my great aunt there. She was there when it was an old folks home. I've been all over that hospital when it was up and running, it used to be nice. Maybe my great aunt will say hello to you if you visit. She would get a kick out of scaring people. She's been dead for years. One person on here said they lived near it. That can't be true, it is way up on a hill, a curvy, winding road goes up to it. It is on Dixie Hwy. across from Value City near Louisville, KY. I would like to take a night time tour of it, I bet it would be great. It does look like an old castle to me. It also reminds me of Kingdom Hospital, the Stephen King mini-series on T,V.

We went on a tour of Waverly on Sept 7th. We filmed the tour and took loads of photos. My cousin took a random photo and when we downloaded the pics on the computer and blew them up you can actually see a little boy looking out a window at US!!!!! I belevie that waverly hills is not only a santatrium or a hospital for people who had a very bad diesease, I belevie that this is a place that many ghosts stay at because maybe they wanted to be cured. And that the only reason that they are there is because they hope that maybe one day in there eternity of staying there they will be saved. They want to have freedom. To be able to go outside and feel the cold air against there skin. But they cant do that. They are stuck at that creepy place forever. So since they know that they can't have it back they want to take that life away from us. They throw things at us. Spook us and/or try to kill us. Even if they dont succeed in harming us they will try to spook the living crap out of us. So next time someone goes to Wavely don't only thimk of it as a plaace to get scared in. When you go there think about what the GHOSTS went threw, and what they are going threw now. Put yourself in there shoes and feel there pain. At school i showed my freinds these things. They flipped out and called me weired. But why am i weird? Because i think of what the ghosts went threw. Yes i am only 13 years old. And right now i am just thinking about when i am older i am going to vist there, but it doesn't matter how old i am or what i think about. You always have to put your self in the shoeos of another. How would you feel if you had to go tothat hospital in the 1900's. You would have to abandone your only family. You would know that you probably would never come back outside. Our group went to Waverly Hills this past Friday night Sept. 7th. The building itself is huge. We were in a tour of 20 people. We had 2 security guards with us while we were locked in the building during the 4hrs. The floor that creeped me out and gave us all the feeling like you were being watched and not wanted there was the 4th floor. We took loads of photos and filmed the entire time. It was one of the most interesting and exciting things that I've ever done. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in hauntings. I'm a truly believe things go on there that can not be explained.

Ok this is to all the whiny ass people who say waverly owners are "money hungry" and other such b.s. lies. All those shirts,bumper stickers,keychains,clocks and other items sold go to the restoration fund. Your 20$ tour donation, and anything you buy help make waverly become what you can plainly see from the exterior. To completely restore this magnificant building is estimated to cost 55 Million. I have volunteered off and on over the last 5 years, and helped make this grand building turn from the rotting sespool of grafitti and broken glass to the sight she is today. We have 52 more windows to install as we speak. the roof sealant has been in processfor quite some time. once the roof is completely sealed, gutters installed, windows installed, the restoration of the interior will commence. To those of you who have toured, and purchased items that Were indeed created by home printers, Thank you. Your donation does really make a differance. penny's make dollars as they say. and to you winy ass babies who feel your 20$ was a waste, Thank you anyway for your support in Waverly Hills Sanitorium's Restoration. I had an experience at Waverly that is very interesting. At the time I did not know the place was haunted because I was new to the area. I missed my bus to high school and decided to walk. Taking a wrong turn up this road I did not realize I was going the wrong way until seeing the building. It was either walk back around and risk getting in trouble or walk straight through the grounds to the tracks by dixie. My walk though was filled with multiple experiences. I believe I had some influence to recent hauntings as the activity there has increased three fold since my "visit" starting with a train derailment in 1994 a few months after my walk at the very spot where the main experience occurred. Also from research I note many phenominom occurr at the same time and year of the experiences (one minor experience is face in window and full torso apparition of a trenchcoat man, looking similar to the internet picture floating around, where there was a conversation. Just recently I found out how famous this place is and how haunted. Now I feel compelled to go back or document my case. I contacted the Waverly historical society to no evail of my objectives. I went this past Saturday for the two hour tour. So many things happened that I don`t even have time to try to explain. You can hear children screaming, moans, otherworldly sounds that are inexplainable. Temperature fluctuations, the sense of being "watched", a sense of sometimes panic and mostly overwhelming sadness. On the fourth floor, not only can you see the shadow people, but you can feel them move THROUGH you. It`s an exciting sensation that makes you want to laugh and cry at the same time. I have pictures, one of a child peeking around a door, it`s there in the first picture, the second picture of the same spot it has moved back behind the door more, and the third picture it`s gone. I didn`t even see anything until I uploaded the pictures from my digital camera.

So a group of us just returned from a 4 hour tour. I will say that it was worth every penny I paid. Everyone in my group experienced something. My husband, myself and a friend were the only ones on the 4th floor. We went there because when we took the 2 hour tour we did not experience the "shadow people" But, being the only ones on that floor at the time we did. We started walking down the hall and you could see the light block out in the distance and then my husband and my friend saw a shadow crawl on the floor out of one of the rooms. Then I saw a shadow about the size of a honeydew melon float past my head and disapear. My friend saw it too. I screamed and almost pulled my husband down. Then we had experiences on the 2nd floor. We heard breathing and then every hair on my body stood straight up. I was petrified. I didn't want to leave though. I have heard things in my house and I have heard things on my digital recorder. However, seeing something and hearing something are two different things. It scared and excited me all at the same time I would recommend that you do the 4 hour tour if you can. And just as a response to the other posts about the guides being rude that is inaccurate. The gentlemen that were with us were more than helpful and friendly.

ive been to waverly hills 3 times the first time i went i was so scared i saw a boy bouncing a ball that tottaly freaked me out!the second time i went i saw a woman in room 55 suffering on the ground crawling!that same time i went up on the roof and heard children screaming and laughing!the 3 rd time i saw a lady hanging from a rope in a room! i also saw a man in a black hat starring at me in a window! after that i will never go back again lol!!!

Waverly hills is definitely haunted. I have been there twice now on a tour and I am convinced of this. Those of you who havent gone yet, you must. There are tours that cost $20.00 a person from 8 to about 11 pm and the trip is well worth the price. They even have 4 hour tours from 12 to 4 in the morning ranging at 50 bucks a person. Last but not least, they have an 8 hour tour from 12 to 8 am, where you travel around the building on your own. Prices for that range at 100 buck a person. No matter which tour you get, you WILL be spooked!

I am scheduled to go there this august. For some reason the place has fasinated me since the first time I saw it on the scariest places on earth back in 2001. Only recently did I discover that you could go there for "overnight" 8 hour stays to get a feel for the place and see what you might see. I've been trying to figure out if I should try to put together a small investigative group or whether the experience may be best on my own. At the moment I have the choice either way, but I really would like to get the most of the experience. It looks creepy enoughbut in some ways I'm more afraid that without the proper equipment and support I may miss something. No matter what it cirtainly looks like it may be interesting.

I was just there May 25th 2007 for an 8pm Paranormal Tour. No ghosts & lots of silly stories. It's a very beautiful old rundown building. Every room's filled with debris & equipment. Lots to be done. They've polished a floor or two, opened the Death Tunnel up end to end (450 ft), replaced several windows, renovated the Laundry Room,etc. The problem is too many rumors & stories. It wasn't creepy. Just sadly ruined. I'll be taking a daytime historical tour for more pictures. Eventually they intend to make it a Bed & Breakfast and restaurant on the roof. BTW, our tour was conducted vis flashlite & no...no screams, voices or shadows.

It was a hot, humid night, almost one year ago today. My cousin, her mother, and close friend neighbor Dale, went to that dreaded and destatute vessel for spirits. As soon as we assended into the death tunnel, I felt an oddddddddd fear stirring deep inside as if we were in the pit of hell, completely ingulfed in pain, suffering and pure evil. All the tiny hairs on my neck begun to stand on end as our tour guide began to tell us the dreaded stories of experimental operations, death, suicide, and insanity. When he had finished his blood soaking surmen we began the most horrifying adventure I have yet to endure. I was walking up the steps to the second floor, when I felt a cold hand brush the side of my cheek and my whole body went numb I began to tumble, tumble down the stairs while a seranade of demons laughed and screamed with their other wordly cries. Or was I just imagining? None of my fellow explorers encountered any of the sort, they said I hadn't even fallen only stood there in a trance. By this time I was sure something wasn't quite right about this place, almost tempted to leave, but I decided against my better judgement to continue on. If I could only go back, I would have ran and kept running until that unholy sanction of dantes inferno was behind me. As we began to walk down the second floor hallway I kept hearing "Phyllis, Phyllis we want your flesh." I thought it was just neighbor Dale, playing tricks on me, and I pushed him and said "Stop it! I'm tired of your shananigans!" but he claimed he was no where near me when I heard the gastily utterings. We finally made it to the fourth floor without any paranormal activities and if only it could have stayed that way. As soon as we turned our flashlights off, the horror began. Shadow people began to dance on the walls paying homage to satan with each sway of their hips, and we saw little Billy bouncing his ball. All of a sudden Billys ball became a head and rolled towards my feet, I kicked it away but it bounced right up into my face and shrieked "Where's my body Phyllis." Everyone stood shocked, and scared beyond movement. I wanted to run but my feet we're planted in the floor. The cruel spirit that embodied the floating head then possessed me, and I began to convulse. All was dark. Screams of my friends and family filled my mind and deafened my spirit when I finally came to my senses I opened my eyes to find myself standing over the dead body of friendly tour guide Goose an ederly man whose only goal in life was to educate the world about this place. I screamed, "What have I done?!" Dale screamed "You've done done it Phyllis, You've killed Goose!" Then to my shock, our lead guide Melvon smashed Dales face in with a two by four, and calmly said, "Oh, Dale, my plan was going so lovely why'd you have to mess it up? Goose is gone, and I've convinced you all that ghost are real. So as I slowly kill you one by one and leave no one but Phyllis, she'll be so whacked out the cops will think she went crazy and did it all. Because none of ya'll deserve to live and take advantage of life. So I'm here to put a stop to this madness!" He then let out an evil cackle worse than ever heard. You see I'm writing this from jail, and I'm sure by now your wondering why you never heard of this dreadful event. It was never let out to the media because they feared an outburst would occur. And Waverly Hills would become a spot for occult sacarafices. But now I have told my story to all of you, and hope you never ever, ever visit Waverly Hills.

I did some electrical work for about a month in the area of the hospital which is being used for the starting point of their yearly haunted house, Me and My cousin were the only people in the building and would constantly here what sounded like people talking and doors closing, We were in an out building which had a tunnel that led into the lower hallway at the Northern end of the building near the old exam room and close to the tunnel. We would sometimes walk the hallways while we were taking breaks and see shadows and here voices, I am not a big beliver in ghost but I will tell you there is definately a different feel about the place than any thing I've ever encountered.

I have once seen a shadow person. Also the movie "Death Tunnel" is a load of poo! there is little truth in this movie. the thing that really spoiled the movie for me was thy tried to hard to make a horror movie and it just didn't work out how they had planned.

I have a friend who's great-grandma was one of the nurses at Waverly. Her great-grandma's friend was the nurse who hung herself on the 5th floor. I could'nt go into Waverly last fall because they've been putting windows in, but me and my dad took pictures of the place. We heard screams coming from the 5th floor. I've seen the program on the Discovery Channel I think it was, about this hospital. I don't believe in Angels or Demons. But I do believe in ghosts. I don't know what they are, but I've seen a few in my time. At least I think I have. The program I saw on the Waverly convinced me that if any place was haunted this place is. And what's up with the brown people. Has anyone asked the local Native Americans what they make of the whole terrain and environment? If it hasn't been done, I urge someone anyone to talk to the Natives of this region to find out what they make of everything. There is something happening here but I don't know what it is.

I have to admit that the claims that the former Waverly Hills Sanitorium is haunted are intrigueing but I have a feeling that the current owners (the Mattinglys) sre trying to make it appear as though it's haunted in order to keep away potential vandals. It just doesn't make sense from a biblical viewpoint for a place to be haunted. When people die, assuming their souls go to heaven, things, such as buildings, are no longer significant so it stands to reason that a spirit isn't going to want to return to Earth to inhabit it.

My friends and I took the 2 hour paranormal tour in Jul of 2006. I caught some very vivid orbs in my photos and on the 5th floor I caught an EVP of a little girl. We are returning this July for an overnight tour. Anyone who says it is a rip off is crazy. You may not believe or even have any personal experiences but, the money that you are spending is to go toward the historical preservation of this old building. People always expect something for nothing. Even if I wasn't a believer I would give the money to help keep a building from being condemed.

The hosital is south of Louisville in the town of Waverly Hills adjacent to a golf course. If you have Google Earth program downloaded, type in Waverly Hills Kentucky and look for a large grassy area in Waverly Hills. The golf course is to the southeast. It is really eerie!!!

Nevermind I went to another site and answered my own question. But now I have another .. I was reading up on the overnite stay .. Whats with staying away from the North Wing roof top? What happened that they dont want you there? Just out of curiousity when people died there were family members not notified? I know of another Sanitorium in Lake George, New York that was for people that had TB but I never heard of any stories about it being haunted. Now I really want to go and see for myself. Call it morbid curiousity I cant help it

I just saw the trailers for both death tunnel and spooked. Ive only lived in Kentucky for four years and am now finding out about Waverly Hills Sanitorium. Althou I do have a question . Seeing that its a historical landmark couldnt they have gone to the historical society to keep it from being run down? I'd love to go and see for myself for no other reason then straight up curiousity.lol

Lauryn, You said that you wanted to find out tour times well here is what I know. They offer Historical Guided tours on Sundays at 2:30pm. Paranormal Guided tours on Fridays and Saturdays at 8,9,10pm. Also, They offer "Half-Night Stays" and complete "Overnight Stays". The "halfnight stays" are 4 hours begining at the stroke of midnight on Friday, and last till 4AM on Saturday morning. The full overnight stays, are 8 hours begining at midnight on Saturday and come to completion 8AM on Sunday morning. Weather permitting - all tours, and overnight stays are planned to begin the first weekend of March 2007. Sorry if this is not enough help for you.

this place is really special to me. Before I had kids and I was still young, me and all my friends would come up here just looking for ghosts and just to hang out. Although we did do some spray painting there, I'm glad. As I looked through some of your photos I saw several times where your picture had captured our names, and when I saw that today, all these wonderful memories came rushing back! As we where visiting Louisville made a trip to Waverly Hills as we arvired at the main gate past the gold croase and stoped a truck pulled up and Priest got out and ask what we were doing we just said we where lost after that we turned around and he open the gate and went in Does anyone know who he is?? we also could hear a women scream form the gate Anyone have any info on the Priest

waverly hill's is purely amazing. i've been once. driving up to it was just a preview of what was to come. it was arould 11 at night, so driving down this one lane road and coming up on what is probably the spookist place i've ever seen, i was instantly hooked! the inside is AMAZING! as you can tell by the pictures. but i def sugguest going! your never going to experiance anything better.

I agree with you Vicki. We were going to do the half night, but the more I thought about it, the money goes for a good cause, so we decided to go for the whole night. I applaud people who take historical locations and fix them up, ghost or no ghost. There are so many beautiful buildings out there that have gone to waste. (But please don’t think I am talking about ANY building from New Orleans or Louisiana in general. The hurricane destroyed the buildings and that was beyond anyone’s control.) I’ve been to Antietam, Gettysburg and Harpers Ferry quite a few times, and it’s just wonderful how much they have preserved these buildings and the landscaping from that era.

I grew up directly across Dixie Hwy in front of Waverly Hills.In the early 70's my elementary school(Wilkerson Elem.on Johnsontown Road I believe)went to sing Christmas carols for the patients at what was then called Woodhaven Geriatrics Sanatarium.I don't remember seeing anything strange but it was a creepy feeling from the minute you enter the facility even then and I was just a child with no preconceived notions.I'm planning on going back for a tour sometime next Spring.For those who went and didn't feel they got their money's worth,maybe you were going for the wrong reasons.It's a beautifully eerie landmark with a great history and I don't really see how you could feel cheated out of $20 while getting to view the place ghosts or no ghosts.Plus the money goes to the restoration.The last time I checked no one was "making" people take the tour so stop the whining "I didn't see any ghost" bs please!If it is haunted the ghost probably decided to keep quiet because they could sense you were a bunch of whiney brats there for the wrong reasons.I'd pay the money even if I knew in advance I'd see nothing but the building.It really is a majestic sight sitting up on that big hill haunted or not!

My GRANDFATHER was a patient at Wavely Hills and as a child my parents use to make me visit him there.I say make me because I was scared to death to go there because I was so scared of the place. He used to tell my parents that there were ghosts and he would see them. It was such a creepy place back then in 1968, and continues to be.

I was a candystriper at Woodhaven Nursing facility for the last two years of the hospitals existance. As i watched ghosthunters, I remembered the gates on the doors to keep the residents inside their rooms, I remembered the little blind lady at the end of the hall singing "The Old Gray Mare, She aint what she use to be aint what she use to be", I could still see the little old gentleman with his fingers through the gait asking for a cigerette, and the sunporch lind up with beds on a sunny day to allow the bedridden a glimpse of the sun. I remember Georgia doing her ceramics and Miss Zavala playing the piano singing Christmas carols. I could still see me, Denise, Mary June, Pam, Christy and Tammy walking back the old gravel road to the out buildings hanging out and sneaking a cigerette. Yes I plan to take a tour after Holloween is over to get a natural feel of the building and maybe I will hear that old familiar tune coming from down the hall.

This is part of Kentucky's history and it's one of the most haunted places in the U.S. but it's a fallen down old ruin there isn't that much of a way that we can save it

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a way to get a private tour on a night with no other tour groups around. I'm sure you have to pay extra money, but thats fine. I just keep hearing that the group tour sizes are huge! like 30 or 40 people in a group, and that you run into other groups. I'm sure that these are still decent tours, but if we're coming out all the way from so cal, I'd rather pay an extra amount to get the place to ourselves, or at least more to ourselves. I go ghost hunting on the Queen Mary all the time and it's always a way, way better expierence on a mon-thur night with a small group. Weekends and tours always have just way to much comotion. (by the way the queen is haunted!, only a few nights out of all of the times I've been there has something happened, but I got 3 great pictures from 2 different nights of ghosts, not orbs or anything dumb like that, but 2 of faces & 1 of a full ghostly body sitting at a piano on an empty ballroom stage, creepy!) Anyways, any info anyone has about this would be appreciated! also if any locals know any other spooky sights in the area let me know. Might as well make the most out of the stay in the area... My friends and I went to Waverly a couple of months ago after researching it quite a bit for historical information mostly, but we were also interested in the paranormal activity reported. I thought the tour was just "OK" - not terrible, but not very interesting to tell the truth. I didn't mind paying the $20 per person since the money was being put back into renovating this historical site. As some other posters have mentioned, we were told at the beginning of the tour that we did not have to go into the death tunnel, that it was very long and difficult to walk back up the stairs. Boy was that the truth. I wish I had listened because I wasn't sure I was going to make it back up the stairs and I'm in decent physical shape. The tour guide was nice enough, not very interesting delivery of information and not enough information however - slightly disapointed with that. I did have a couple of odd experiences while there. I felt very sick to my stomach as soon as we entered the building which lasted most of the tour and I generally just did not feel well. Once we got out of the building I was much better almost instantaneously. Also, I felt someone rub my shoulder while in the building and there was no one around me at the time that was close enough to have touched me nor fast enough to have touched me and moved. I did think it was a little dangerous in there especially on the stairwells inside the building. I wish they would repair some of the hand railings and the steps. Other than that, it is an interesting building historically and any paranormal activity for me was just icing.

I have only seen Waverly from a distance but am entranced. It is interesting that it may be haunted but what I am attracted to is the building itself and all of the history behind it. I no longer live in Louisville but am not far. My friends from Lexington went on a tour @ Waverly and said they had experiences. I am very skeptical myself but am looking forward to the day that I load up my camera (photo buff) and head on down there.

My father was a TB patient at Waverly Hills in the late 1930's. He died in 1945 at St.Joseph's hospital. I have a picture of him sitting in a bed with his robe on and now I have that robe. It is my treasure. I was only 3 yrs old when he died. I would rather see the old Waverly Hills demolished than see it as a Halloween Haunted House. It deserves more respect to those who struggled to survive that terrible illness. He was only 31 yrs old. A loving daughter

I hope Tina will be able to restore Waverly. I spent alot of time there when I was young. Both of my grandparents were residents there when it was a nursing home & my grandmother died there in 1964. She told me there were strange things happening even then. It was really weird watching the GhostHunter's driving up that long driveway with the building coming into view - what a sense of deja vu. Check out this photo taken the morning after an investigation in August of 06. www.hauntedindiana.com/waverly_media.html Judge the photo and video clips for yourself. Contrary to most of the claims on this board made by angry 17 year old spoiled brats who can't afford their own gas money, let alone ONE DAYS worth of energy costs to run this place, the money collected at Waverly DOES go back into the building, insurance, tools and many other responsibilities! If anyone is paying the tour money to "get scared" go spend it at a local haunted attraction and stop whining because ghosts don't just appear for your sake! Grow up! On the other hand, if you are interested in experiencing a part of history, posses enough common sense to know when it is summer, yea the weather is warm and a tunnel or building of this size cannot be air conditioned smacks forehead and have at least the smallest curiosity of the paranormal, I suggest going! Brittanyspirit - If you are talking about Death Tunnel - it is a horrible movie. It is really neat to see the building in it though. I have been to Waverly and wanted to see the movie for that reason. I don't suggest seeing it for any other reason other than to see the building.

The 8 hour over night is $100.00 per person and you have to have a minimal of 10 people.You must contact Tina Matingly at waverly to set up your groups date.They also offer a 4 hour for $50.00 a person.At least they did a couple months ago.The waverly historic site has the # to call.

i wish i could do a tour of wavely hills, to see the historic hospital in person would be nice, but not sure if it would be posible for me. its a shame some negitive people spoil it for the ones truely interested in waverly. ericka makes me laugh, she tried to demin waverly, and the joke is on her, meaning she's the one getting belittled instead, i hope she has revisited this sight and she is getting the negitive remarks on her, or hope some one tells her to read them.

I mean seriously Erica, use a dictionary and look up the word paranormal. I wonder if you could spend time in the place ALONE? May-be the fourteen year old guide at the rear was there to stop people fleeing if something did happen? I would imagine an old vandalized building like that would be extremely hazardous to anyone running around who didn't know the layout. Living in Australia i probably wont get to experience Waverly. Tonight a group of friends and I took a tour of Waverly. I grew up in Louisville. I ventured into the tunnel in l978, and now it is just as scary. I just think it is a shame what vandals have done to the place over the years. It's also a shame that it is being modernized. It should be kept from deteriorating any further, but modernizing it is just wrong. We couldn't even get into the morque because of the haunted house that is starting this coming up weekend. It is not a fun house and shouldn't be treated like one. It is a place where alot of people unfortunately died. There has to be another way to keep the place running. But to pay money and not get to the creepiest part of the facility is just wrong. I have always considered this place historic and it should be treated with the utmost respect.

i watched the movie "deathtunnel" with my dad, after we found out that waverly hills was a real place i started researching it. i love the pictures of the place and on the move "death tunnel" i thought it was great that they used the real recording on the movie. And also how some true facts where in the story.. i would love to see waverly hill for mine self to experince them paranormal activity, but i live in australia ao i dont i will go for a long time:) but i do think its sad that people absuse the waverly hills because it has so much emotions, stories and history inside it...

I hate to see such negative opinions , I was just there on sunday september 17 2006, the guides etc were exceptionally nice, informative, and helpful, and since half of our group didn't take it serious and were loud and disturbing, I still had more than my monies worth, though , in part due to the fac t that 4 of us kept away from the others, as for the owners being money hungry, that is laughable, if anyone seriously took a good look at the building , the destruction of it, and thought about how much it will cost to even make it halfway restored, there couldn't be any " real money " in it,to see such a magnificent building alone is worth the price of admission, I wish I had lots of money, I would certainly donate to the cause! It cost us 50 dollars each to spend 4 hours there, with guides, I was more than glad to pay it, would love to go back with the right people. My hats are off to the people who run it, the guides, etc, some of which have been hurt on the site! Yes, I did see a few things , none of which I could " prove " and nothign huge, but well worth it, and again,, thanks to the guides etc, you were great!!!!!

Until you ask, don't make assumptions. Im not mad that you called me a bitch. It is people like you that make me the way I am on tours. It is our job to make sure that no one wonders in and out of rooms because THERE ARE THINGS IN THAT BUILDING THAT CAN HURT YOU! Its also our job to make sure the tour stays together. If you would have listened you would have heard him say that its a long walk down, IF YOU DON"T WANT TO GO YOU DONT HAVE TO, the walk back up is even harder than the walk down. Secondly, you should be made aware that every single person on that hill with the exception of two individuals VOLUNTEER their time for often crass, rude and shitty people such as yourself. Certainly you are a liar when you say that I walked you to the bottom of the body chute. I haven't walked a group down that tunnel since late March of 2006. Liar. Why do you feel the need to misrepresent the way I conducted your tour? What does lying do for you? What motivates you to lie to these people? The only time that I have ever had to alter the tour in any fashion in this calendar year was when we had trespassers inside the building and the guests were at risk. friends and i just took a tour tonight,we had a great time and experienced unusal things and mystifing things the tours were alot better than they used to be my friend of several years went with me together along with the owner and two other of our friends witnessed a miraculious experience. Tina,is an awesome lady and i praise them for the job that they are doing with waverly, and when something cost 55 million dollars to restore i guess i would sell things as well as accepting donations whatever would aid in the process to help along the way.if you have not been there you should go if not for nothing else than to see the huge structure.

I disagree with ANYONE that says that Waverly Hills is a rip off. I went on a tour in July and it was a truly great experience. Me and 19 of my friends loaded up in 4 vehicles and drove 8 hours to get there. I did'nt experience any paranormal activity myself but the majority of my friends did. I guess I was concentrating TOO hard to see or hear something. But without a doubt, I do believe that many spirits still linger in that hospital. Just because I did'nt witness anything that time does'nt mean its not there. It IS there. And who knows, maybe next time I will experience something. Yes,I will be returning in the near future. I am really bothered by the lack of respect people are showing Waverly Hills in all these comments,so Im going to speak my mind,like it or not. Why are you negative people so mad that you did'nt experience anything, you should be happy that you even got to be inside that hospital with so much HISTORY. That building is a Historical Landmark that was in operation when our country was going through one of its most troubling times. Innocent lives were being taken on average of ONE an HOUR due to this spreading epidemic that at the time was considered a death wish. People spent the last moments of their life in those walls, praying for a cure up until the very end. Fortunate people where released thanks to the wonderful care given to them by the Doctors and Staff. But all you people are thinking about is seeing or hearing a "ghost", and then you have the nerve to get mad and disrespect the place when you dont. And to all those people that said that its a "rip-off" and that the owners are "money hungry", I'll have you know that if it was'nt for the current owners that Beautiful building would probably be going to waste or demolished by now just like the previous owner wanted. I am very happy to say that I contributed to the preservation of a piece of American history. I agree with that other person who said they need nicer people and more organization. They were the rudest bunch of people I've dealt with in a long time. It was all hurry, hurry, hurry. Those kids they have that walk in the back of the group are on some kind of a power trip or something. All they want to do is be rude to you. We never got a chance to stop and see much, it was a BIG DIASAPPOINTMENT. Oh, when and if you go, you are subjected to a long boring movie presentation, so be ready for it! Anyone who says they're not in it for the money, just look around that room they put you in before you take a tour. They're selling EVERYTHING! T-shirts, bags, snacks and drinks, UGLY clocks and CRAPPY bumper stickers and magnets that they print out themselves on their home printer! Not in it for the money -- NOT! Also, to Miss Mary: They DO say that Waverly is a ghost hunt! Take a look at the T-shirts they sell, they say "WAVERLY GHOST CHASERS" on them just as plain as day, they take you on that one floor to LOOK FOR SHADOW PEOPLE, and they do the tours AT NIGHT. Come on. If it was only a historical thing, don't you think they would do the tours during the day so you could actually see something? All they want is money and MONEY is what they're getting too. I'd like to know who's keeping track of the books and when was the last time they were audited. It's an all cash operation with a LOT of cash changing hands. SO IT WAS KIND OF LIKE A PART OF FAMILY HISTORY FOR ME,IM GLAD SOMEONE BOUGHT IT WHO IS RESTORING IT INSTEAD OF TEARING IT DOWN.WE DIDNT SEE NOTHING AT ALL THERE,WHO KNOWS MAYBE WE WERENT MEANT TO. I took a tour a few years back and just loved it. I went on my second tour of this place the other night and I'll tell you what, I WILL NOT BE BACK. I don't know if they have new people up there than before or what but the people that were there the other night were condescending and rude. I was in a HUGE group and we couldn't hear anything because of all the people shuffling around and the other groups we kept running into. The tour guide, I don't know where he came from but he was so full of it. Waverly needs some advice and here it is: you NEED smaller groups, you need NICER people working for you AND you need some organization!

I recently went to Waverly Hills on 8-5-2006 with my ghost hunting group and I can honestly say that the place is haunted due to our experiences and collected evidence on the 10:30 tour.I drove 4 hours not expecting to get anything but had always wanted to see the building which is a huge historical site .First thing that happened that was odd was when we were walking up to the building I put brand new batterys in my camera and turned it on to set the quality and time & date when the batterys were suddenly sucked completly dry to the point that I couldn't even properly turn the camera back off! I had to put another set in just to do so.I had personaly checked the batterys before heading to waverly with my multi meter to prevent DOA batterys.The second thing that happened was on the second floor I was at the very back of the group with another member when I clearly heard foot steps behind me!I told my team member to listen and we heard it again!There was nobody there.The third account of the evening was the witnessing of moving shadows on the fourth floor,at first glance I thought it was a trick of the eye but the activity would actually change and become thicker and then disipate,moonlight would be covered and uncovered a very awsome visual.When I go to locations that are known to be haunted I always enter expecting nothing and let the evidence do the talking.After getting back to STL.MO. me and my group went over the video and photos taken and were excited to see that we captured (ribbon energy/plasma lights) on video several times during the tour a truely amazing site.People need to understand that when it comes to paranormal activity and hauntings you never know when it will occure and may never notice anything on a visit.I live in a house with activity and 90% of the time the house seems very normal but I have witnessed movement,have had pictures with orbs,ectoplasm and faces,captured over 100 EVP's and have had freinds and family experience voices and other noises that can not be explaned making me a true believer in ghost and the afterlife. I will say I enjoyed my visit very much to Waverly Hills it is amazing to see how far the progress of restoration has come since the pictures on this site were takin which are awsome photos.I hope to visit again soon and hopefully capture more great evidence.

I have noticed that there are alot of negative comments being made here. I would like to let everyone know that I know the current owners- they are friends of the family so to speak- I don't know them personally- but still. It is very RUDE and uncalled for that you all assume that they are giving tours to make money. True- they are making money, but it is not going into their pocket. The money made from the tours they host goes to restoring the HISTORIC hospital- which is just what it is. No one ever said that Waverly was a ghost hunt. No one ever said you were garanteed to see or hear or feel anything spiritual or ghostly. The tour is to see the history of the hospital. This particular hospital is full of loads of history unlike the other hospitals in Louisville or even in the world. Many terrible things happened here. An epidemic happened here and hundreds- more like thousands of people died not only at this place, but all over the country because of TB (do you happen to know what that is or did you fail to research it as well?) Do you know why they built the hospital on the hill? Do you know why they built it in the shape they did? Do you know what happened to it after the whole TB thing calmed down? Do you know what they did to people in that hospital? The experiments, the so called "medical treatments"? Sure some people were well after being there, but not all of them. Notice that there were alot of bad happenings here. I'm sure that to the believers, this is enough proof that there is most likely spiritual energy here. I myself believe there is- even though I have never been there to see it. I sure as hell have always got a creepy feeling when I drove by the hill it sits behind- and this was BEFORE I knew it sat back there. Also, do you really think that the spirits (if any) that are there are going to just jump out and say BOO? Hello people, this is not Casper we are talking about. Whatever spirits are up there obviously are pretty upset at the way things went down with them. They are not going to just show up for your enertainment. They do not want to be seen. A friend of mine went on a tour and EVERY picture he took there seemed almost messed up- like it looked molded or something, but all of the others he took (they were at a birthday party) on that SAME roll of film were perfectly fine. So, maybe I am just hopeful here, but I think it is still out of hand for you to assume that the owners are just trying to make money off of this place. Would you go to a so called haunted museum just to get a ghostly experience? It's the same thing with this place. I have relatives that died at this place many moons ago. It was a serious thing. And I am sorry that your tour didn't suit your taste. There are reasons that they won't let people into some of the rooms. There is a reason that the floors are wet and that there is stuff on the ground. Did you notice that the windows were gone from the building, or did you miss that one too? When it rains, the water is going to get on the floor. Dumb kids like to visit there and throw things at it and make it a mess, along with people on the tour who are rude and messy. When I actually go on a tour- which will be here soon, I will let you all know about my sure-to-be lovely experience. That 20$ dontation is going to a good cause in my eyes- restoration of a historic place- of a once "Terrible Miracle" as I like to call it.

I apologize for leaving two comments but I failed to read others comments before I posted mine. I'd like to say re: others negative comments about Waverly that I truely think the experience is personal. I honestly believe that if the people who had negative experiences returned with different mind-sets they could possibly experience something to change their minds. Now, I had a ghostly experience but then again I wasn't going out of my way to have it, i.e. thinking i'd see ghosts with my naked eye or hear disembodied voices etc, it just happened. Secondly, the group I was with was there for an all nighter and we had the option to decline having a tour guide. Perhaps if someone came along with us such as a tour guide my experience would've been different? I don't know. But all I DO know is that I went, I didn't expect much, and I recieved the holy grail of ghost hunters outside of seeing a full body apparition. Something touched me that clearly WAS NOT there and that's all the proof I need to know that Waverly is haunted. I don't know how ingulfed some of you are in ghost hunting but common sense would tell you that you wouldn't be able to "command" a ghost to appear to you or to make a noise, etc. The dead are unpredictable. That's one thing I am very certain of. I mean no disrespect to those who didn't have a good experience at Waverly Hills. I'm merely saying, maybe you should try again and be still and watch and listen...then see what happens. But from the sound of it, some of you would rather put that money spent into your gas tanks lol.....which is fine. Have great ghostly experiences in the future.

On June 29th, 2006 my girlfriend and myself went on an overnight ghost hunt with a few groups and some independants to Waverley Hills. I've been a "ghost hunter" for some time and wasn't expecting anything to really "throttle" me while I was there. I merely expected to get some photos of orbs and possibly some good EVPs but to my surprise...we sat in what appeared to be some sort of storage room that was only perhaps 10X10 feet and tiled from ceiling to floor. We started up an energy circle as we sat on the floor and as someone asked if there was anyone there with us and if so could they touch one of us....whoever WAS ther with us ran there fingers through my hair as plain as day. There was no one behind me as i sat on the floor with my back to the door of the room. Something is definitely going on in Waverly Hills and I'm proof to myself that whoever haunts that hospital definitely has the energy to manifest themselves enough to be physical with the living. Long live Waverly.

That place BLOWS. The owner woman, TINA, I have never met a more money hungry person EVER. We had an over night scheduled for my paranormal group and we were repeatedly told that we would be the ONLY people in the building. The night of our investigation, lo and behold -- there were TWO other groups there. We were only told we'd be the only group there so she could get more money! At $100 a pop, I'm sure she's raking it in too. Oh, and the ghosts? The only ghost I witnessed was this little dude who worked there. I don't remember his name but he's a short dark haired guy with a mustache. I caught him skulking around in there a couple of times with no flashlight. I'm sure he's behind a lot of the "hauntings" that take place there.

The owners themselves call the evening tours THE PARANORMAL TOURS. During the tour, the guides state they are taking you to the 4th floor to see SHADOW PEOPLE. It is a rip-off because the tours are neither paranormal nor does anyone actually see shadow people. If one was told beforehand that it was just a "historical tour" I would of known what to expect. But they lead you to believe that you will experience paranormal.

I've never seen any truly convincing evidence of ghosts anywhere, so I wouldn't expect to see any on this tour. You're paying for a tour, and you get a tour, so how is it a rip-off? If I go, it wouldn't be with the expectancy of seeing something freakinsh, but of seeing the inside of this landmark firsthand, and hearing of it's history, which is probably the most interesting aspect.

WAY TO GO ERICA!!!!!!!! Everyone should be made aware that Waverly is a money-making venture for the owners. If anyone thinks there are ghosts up there, they are in need of a serious reality check. Their tours bring in thousands of dollars each week, so they have to keep up the drama, so people keep getting suckered in. You at least would think that they would remove the garbage out of the tunnel so that one won't trip and fall. And yes, the tunnel tour is a wet, slippery hike down concrete steps and then turn around and go back up them again. WAKE UP PEOPLE, DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY !!!

i took a tour of waverly hills in october of 2005. i've lived in louisville all of my life & i've heard so many different stories about waverly, i was thrilled to get to take a tour. someone my mom works with knew a tour guide up there, so we got our own little "personal" tour. we were in a group of about 10 other people, so there were probably about 16 total. we got to waverly at 10pm & left for the tour at about 11. we got a tour of EVERY floor, went in many of the rooms, went to the roof, peeked in the elevator, went in and around room 502, walked around the outside of the property, went down the body chute, down every hall, up every flight of steps, etc. etc. we saw & heard many things & were told tons of stories. our tour guide was amazing & really good at what he was there to do. i was definitely impressed. i plan on going again soon, i was pleased at how it all turned out. we didn't end up leaving the property until 2am. it was so much fun, i'd recommend it to anyone but make sure that your tour guide is good. if i can find out the guys name, i'll post it in here because he was excellent. i think the quality of the tour depends on who you get as a tour guide.

I took a tour of waverly saturday night at 11 pm. It was such a waste of time and money. First off, they had 30+ people in one single group so it wasn't as much of a personal experience as one would expect when paying (i mean "donating") $20. Second, the tour was reversed and re-routed every 15 minutes to keep us from running into other tour groups, can you say overbooking? It was hot as hell in the building throughout the tour, however it would not have been that bad if we hadn't started off in the "death tunnel". We started there and the tour guide lead us down to the very freaking bottom of it, which was hot but you didn't really feel the heat until you started climbing back up 200+ stairs to get back to the top. I saw/heard NOTHING in the tunnel, it was just a boring, sweaty workout. Once finished with the tunnel we proceeded inside to the first floor, again nothing. On to the second and third and room 502. Absolutely NOTHING. I heard no screams, no footsteps, so no ghostlike figures, absolutely no paranormal activity whatsoever. They take us off to some corridor where apparently some kid named Timmy always kicks around this ball. I saw no ball, no ghostlike figure of a boy, or anything. Then guess what, smack in the middle of the tour we stop for a "smoke break". Seriously. After that, the original tour guide pawns us off on some younger tour guide to finish out the tour. One last place, the fourth floor. Upon which this new guide tells us that there is always activity, even on slow nights. But the catch is, you have to turn off ALL YOUR LIGHTS, flashlights cameras every type of light to see the "shadow people". What a fucking rip off because I'll tell you what. When you turn out lights and everything gets dark suddenly, your eyes play tricks on you. Which is JUST WHAT THEY WANT THERE AT WAVERLY A PLACE OF NO PARANORMAL ACTIVITY...your eyes to play tricks on you. So while all of our eyes are adjusting to NO LIGHT, they proceed to tell us that these "dark spots" in the air are really "shadow people". Bullshit. I did not pay, well "donate", $20 to have my eyes play tricks on me in the dark in some old run down hospital. Overall, the tour was fine if you want to know history of the place and by history I mean... "how ahead of its time waverly was with its TECHNOLOGY (i.e. having headphones so patients could listen to the radio on the patio while about to die)". That's it. A good "educational" trip. But nothing as far as paranormal activity or any surreal events, which is what most people would be willing to sacrifice $20 for anyway. So if you want my real opinion, USE YOUR $20 TO PUT SOME GAS IN YOUR TANK instead of donating it to the biggest rip-off, lucrative CROOKS ever. That's right Tina Mattingly. Oh and the other little tour guide they had with them was 14 and that little bitch stood in the BACK OF THE GROUP the whole time, she was afraid of nothing. If waverly having a 14 y/o tour guide IN THE BACK OF THE GROUP wasn't a red flag to let you know there's nothing to be afraid of...then maybe the fact that the tour guide REPEATEDLY TOLD US OF ALL KINDS OF FAUX PAS THAT THE HOSPITAL STAGED FOR TELEVISION ...would let you know that it is a RIP OFF. scandalous.

You are herded like cattle and don't dare stick your head in a room to look at anything The security kid was rude. It was painfully obvious since the window panes were out, everytime we felt a breeze from outside we could also see the tree branches swaying outside causing "shadows" on the floors inside. When someone in the group mentioned it, we were hurried along to the next area. THE TOURS STINK and are a waste of money!!!!!

I have been on two waverly tours and absolutely NOTHING PARANORAMAL occurred. One was during the day and the other at night. the guides were trying to mentally psych everyone up thru the tours talking about different paranormal events that have happened there. Having been to places where I truly experienced paranormal, I was extremely disappointed (as were others on our tour). Learning the history of the building was interesting, but I truly believe nothing paranormal exists at that site. After going and talking later with other people that have also gone to Waverly (some prior to ligit tours) they also said it is a bunch of hype. I guess people have to decide for themselves after being there, it is an eerie spooking looking place, and if I was a ghost, I'd probably like it there, but please dont go and expect activity. You will be disappointed. Go and enjoy the history and a good ghost "story"

I must say the claims to haunting at the Sanitorium are somewhat farfetched to most people but I found for myself that the alleged hauntings are completely true. I had gone to Waverly Hills about 3 years ago on an overnight trip with a few friends...we were up in the fifth floor hallway and we saw shadows going back and forth in front of us from doorway to doorway, they must have been around 3 feet high and looked vaguely like children. Also there were literally hundreds of orbs going from side to side and all over...for those of you who don't know, orbs are supernatural occurences thought to be spirits/ghosts. Then while we were down in the death tunnel, nearing the bottom, there was this incessant scraping noise followed by what sounded like the thud of boots. This does a lot toward going to what did occur in the days when Waverly Hills was still in comission, the dead bodies would be dragged down the ramp in order to be disposed of properly to prevent the spread of TB. But, the thing that freaked me out the most was a child's ball roll toward me and stop at my feet and a little girl some distance up the hall staring at me....I didn't touch the ball, just stood there....I would advise anyone looking to have their own experiences or just see the sanitorium to go overnight as you have more time to explore.

I went up there a few hours ago, since I live right next to it. Apparently they are doing some work on the building. In the second pic you can see the work truck and what I'm guessing is a disposal tube. Reminded me of Session 9 ;) I don't know what's up with the random window installation... Most of the graffiti is gone or diminished, but I think they did that back when they first started having the Halloween parties up there. I had to get outta there since there was so much activity going on, and didn't want to get in trouble. Thanks for the tour info. I'd pay $20 to be able to go in there and get the full shebang. I like that the new owners are embracing it's history and reputation and putting it out there for the world to see. I don't believe in any of this ghost business, but it's (non-supernatural) history makes it an interesting landmark on it's own merit. Plus I think it's cool that I live next to "one of the most haunted places on Earth." ;)

I believe that this place is truly scary and all the hauntings, noises & sights are totally true!! I do plan to visit. This program was the most awesome, spooky, creepy thing I have ever saw. Jose, they are plenty of haunted places in Southern Cal to visit, I should know I live here as well. Stagecoach Inn in Newbury Park is one, Leonis Adobe House next to the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas is another. Out in Hidden Hills just Northwest of Westlake Village they are these haunted windmills close to the Alan Ladd Estate, very spooky, a man hanged himself on these windmills in the 1950's and the windmills will go crazy in the middle of a still night. Also on the same road back there is an apparation of an old Spanish soldier on the side of the road that I Have seen personally.

I've just seen The Deathtunnel and Spooked. Deathtunnel was a little bit strange but Spooked was verry interesting. When I hear the voices of the ghosts or see the pictures, I always think it is really scary. The idea that hundreds people are killed their or thousands people died beacause a disease is verry freaky. Are their people here who been there in Waverly. dj, me and some family members took a tour of WHS last night and they did take us upstairs to the most spooky (hot) spots.it was a awesome tour, it lasted like 2 hours and was well worth it. if ya get a chance i woukd recommand you go.i got several pics of big orbs (way too big to be dust), and i got a SWEET pic of my wife standing in a hallway and above her is an orb and a smokey mist!!!!

Yeah. At one point they had about three people going through the body shute per hour, which originally started as an supply shute. Also, a nurse, discovering she was pregnant, attempted to perform surgery on herself, and, having no husband to support her, hung herself. I am pretty sure of this as I've seen the death records of the place, and there is 'suicide' or something similar marked beside the name of one of the nurses. It was really sad, because, when the sanitorium was opened as a "retirement" home, people were pretty much sent there to die. They would be left sitting there in their own excrement, etc. It was terrible. They were really mistreated.

Ive been to the haunted U.S.S.Yorktown aircraft carrier but Waverly Hills caughtmy attention on Scariest Places on Earth. Im from Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Ive wanted to go up there (legally) for a while now. I just wish they'd allow you to view the upper floors where the most frequent hauntings occur.Ive read several accounts from people who were there. Michelle I can give you some info It is owned by Tina & Charles Mattingly the people on the show. It also is a tourist attraciont of sorts. And as of last week when I talked to Tina about a tour it was not being turned into a bed & breakfast or anything else. You can go to waverlyhillstbsanatorium.com for further info on the building history and other non-paranormal info. They give tours for donations to try to restore the building to it's beautiful state it was in the day. It is a very interesting place worth checking out. That is why I was so outraged to see people have vandalized it.

Only last week, saw Waverly Hills on "Ghost Hunters." Having a discussion about this show at work, here are a few questions. Is Waverly Hills owned by the people who wanted the place investigated for hauntings by Ghost Hunters?" Is Waverly Hills a typical "tourist attraction or is it being turned into something else? It is a very interesting place to see and obviously Ghost Hunters came up with the conclusion that the place is haunted. The owners are seriously considering a few ideas about refurbishing the place. First they want to try to get water and electricity up there to facilitate a clinic on the first floor. Second they have been kicking around the idea to have a haunted bed and breakfast on the upper floors. The place is so immense that they could establish 5 different 'businesses' and no one would be affected by the other. I hope they can get enough interest and donations/funding to rebuild and maintain the once beautiful building.

hey me in my dad in some more people are surpose to be going to waverly hills this summer. We are going to pay or way in. But if any body wants to know were to sneek in at just go around the building in you will see a hole in the building. its not that big but you can craw through it. it leads to the basement. how i found this out is that my friend name mack went to that place alot of times because he use to live by that place. but there are people watching that building so dont get caught. he is the one that told me were to sneek in also there is alot of things happening in that place. me in my dad is going because it thinks it a great place to capture something there. he wants to try to capture a shawdow perosn there on film. but if you go an sneek in dont get caught. plan a time ot do it. is is more scary at dark.

I am very interested in Waverly Hills Sanitorium and have read a few comments on this page. But there are a few mix-ups about this place, mainly about the "body shute." This wasnt a place to just "get rid" of the dead bodies. It was a means of transportation of the bodies and supplies. It was alot easier to send supplies that they needed up and down the shute rather than run the whole building. They did send bodies down it but it was for good reason. There were so many patients being cared for there and it really made it worse for them seeing bodies being transported downstairs and out into the vehicals. They used the shute so the patients really wouldnt see anything. And it was in an orderly manner....they didnt just throw them down there. They used the same meathod as coal mines do LOL.

I just saw Waverly Hills on The Ghost Hunter last night. I lived real close to it and have been there once many moons ago (illegally). I have, however heard that it was torn down. Is this true or just a rumor? I would love to take a legal tour, if it is still standing. Does anybody know how to do this.

I would love to go there if anyone's up for it. I'm from Louisville, and recall my grandmother talking about the place when I was a kid. Apparently a sister of hers was there during the TB outbreak and gave birth to what was assumed to be a stillborn baby, that was (according to her) sent down the body shute (I never quite believed her), when some staff noticed that the baby was still moving & alive. At any rate I fully intend to visit soon, and have a look. Anyone interested in joining me, let me know.

I've been to Waverly, and have actually been in it. Really creepy to say the least. But save your time if you want to sneak in though, they have 6 guys roaming the grounds at all times. Best bet is to go up there play dumb, but be really cool to them, and they might give you a tour. Thats what happened for me. And it helps if you have a some hot girls with you lol. Either way, this place has to been seen to appreciate. It's scary as hell just looking at it from the gates.

Me and 5 of my friends first come to waverly 2 years ago for the haunted house. 2 days ago we come back to visit the hole place. We had to break in but we went through the hole thing from 502 to the end of the tunnel. I am sure security knew we was there. Some strange things happend. We got lots of video. i just got finished whatching a movie called "death tunnel" and it took place in this sanitorium and i got really intreasted. i found out that this place has a 500-foot long underground tunnel that they at one time used to get rid of the dicesd bodys. HOW FREAKY.

Hello, I have just discovered this website and I am very interested. It is hard to believe that there is such a big piece of history right in Louisville. I have seen some things about going on a tour on the place, and I am very interested in that. My family and I have tried to go up there a couple of times in about the past five years or so, and there were some pretty illegitimate looking people up there that told us we couldn't even drive up there, so I don't really know what was going on with that. I am going to see if I can get a tour.

I've been by recently and it seems they are builing some kind of housing project next to the hospital. Goes to show you that the Louisville Govenment is interested in tax bases instead of preserving a part of history. I am not sure about the paranormal or if I even believe in it however the number of people worldwide that are drawn to this site is enough to give it the slightest bit of attention. To all of those who beleive and are confident this is a site of activity, you should form some bond and generate funds to save it from development becuase the Louisville Metro Government is nothing more than about money. Louisville is the most ass backwards government you will find. This after all had enough lore behind it to make it in the "World's top 10 Scariest" places. It must mean something. Too bad Louisvillians are so stupid as to elect a meto government that dosen't give a rats ass about history and forklore that may actually be a cash cow for them in the future as at least a major tourist attraction at the very least. Shame on Louisville.

HI, I live about 1/2 a mile from Waverly, so needless to say I have been up there a countless number of times illegally and with tour guides. I recently went up there on Oct. 27, 2005. To be honest with you, I questioned wether the place was really haunted because as many times as I have been up there (around 50 or so), I never seen anything that I could say was truely paranormal activity. On several occasions I seen things that I thought maybe it was something and heard lots of strange noises. But, when I was up there on Oct. 27, me and my sister seen a ghostly figure of a man walking next to this guy we didn't know. I can now actually now say, Waverly Hills Sanitorium does have paranormal activity in it.

Hello , today my freind showed me a picture of waverly of when it was a tb hospital ( the castle lloking version ) and i found out all this information about and became SO interested and fascinated with waverly and some of its history . Although it is quite sad that all those people died and got hung and stuff , i am very fascinated with the subject. i have realised i have left quite a few comments but this place is really quite facinating and i think it is sad how the dead bodies were disposed of but thats how they chose to get rid of them and also wasnt the waverly sanitorium a old people home once the sanitorium was shut down.. didnt they paint the walls greenish to keep the old people happy or something? but then they had to close it because of the ghosts and i think TB. thanks for hosting a great site.

My grandfather worked there in pestcontrol in the 50's and my father worked there as a janitor right before it closed in 80 so I grew up hearing alot of stories of the place. When I became a teenager of course I was curious and with a lack of better things to do we would sneak up there late at night. Most of the times without so much as even a flashlight because the guards would usually be camped outside by a fire. Now we probably went up there over fifty times over a course of a number of years. Now on this one occasion we went in the day with brooms and such to clean up this room on the second floor to set up ramps and such to skate and upon running into the security we simply said we were the asbestos removel team and ended up having a pretty good day of it. Now on another occasion we went in the day and ended up running into some people who were leasing it out for october for some haunted house. It was some lady and a guy from england and they asked us if we wanted to help clean up the building in exchange for getting into the haunted house free of charge. So we agreed and we spent about a week in that place cleaning the first floor. They had also inlisted a number of my friends to draw graffati up there and they paid for the paint. So alot of the graffati you see up there they paid for I guess to cover up the more obscene drawings that occured over the years. I tell you they had to have paid some inspectors off to have let the show go on. Because right before the inspector came they sprayed water everywhere to make the asbestos drop from the air. There is so much asbestos and lead in that building there is no way to get rid of it. Anyhow I think over the weekend some 20,000 people showed up there. They had a number of bands play and in one room in the morgue they even had a discoball with a dj and a bunch of young thugs trying to breakdance. In one room they had a hospital bed with some zombie looking dummy in it. This was all beyond me I personally have respect for the dead and looking back on it this was no better than putting a haunted house where the world trade centers stood. I haven't been up there since then and I dont plan on going back. As for any supernatural I guess people go to places like that and expect to see something. I personally never saw anything like those orbs everyone talks about but I do remember sitting on this ledge in the sunroom by myself and the sun was going down and I got this creepy feeling and I dont know if youve ever seen something with your mind but not your eyes? but what I saw was a lady and she walked right up to the ledge where I was sitting and kind of sat within me and it was like I was seeing what she had once saw and this probably lasted an hour or so and I snaped out of it like a dream. I dont really remember any details of what I saw but man that place messed with my dreams at night for years and that is why I have no desire to go back.

Many of the messages posted here reflect the stupidity of the average person. As for Waverly, I think the old Fortress of death should be torn down. It's a testament to nothing other than pain and despair. Normally, I'm totally against tearing down historical buildings, but this is the one exception. The couple who bought it are nuts! We went and as we stood there looking in amazement at the size of this building two of the people that I came with went to the building and we stood at the end of the road to where you can see the building.... The two boys screamed and we took off running back down the trail.... It's crazy because while running if you happen to run or the side of the grass your feet will sink into the ground like something is grabbing you... One of the fellows that I was with his shoes came off while running and it was stuck in the ground like he was about to sink if he had stood there for just another second... But he ran and ran until we saw some flashlights coming up the trail so we stopped thinking it was the gaurd but luckily it wasnt it was some more great minds attempting to see if waverly is really haunted so we all went back to the top and as soon as we came around the corner the guards came chasing us in their truck so we did what any normal personal would do we jumped into the bushes until they got tired of looking for us.... So if there is anyone wanting to go up there I will go with..... but i will tell you this if you are chased by the guards jump in the bushes they will not get out looking for you they will tell you that they will call the police if you don't come out, but stay in the wood for if you come out they will send you to jail... but they will let you go as well.......

Me and one of my friends went up the path to the hospital one night, but she freaked out and we left before getting any further. I wasn't happy to say the least, because I have tried to convince people to go there with me and they are all too scared. I think I am going to have to check into the yahoo group. That was many years ago when I went - back in 96 I think. I have sinced married and my husband doesn't quite share the passion of ghosts and haunts. THE VISITS THERE WHERE INCREDIBLE.MY MOTHER TOLD ME OF HER VISITS TO MY UNCLE. SHE HAD TO WALK UP THE STAIRS FROM DIXIE HWY.BECAUSE THE BUS WOULD NOT GO UP IN FEAR OF THE DISEASE. THE PATH WAS LINED WITH ROSES AND WAS QUITE STEEP TO CLIMB. I visited waverly...illegally. We got on top of the roof. Some people i know say the go there often. It wasn't that scary even though it was after midnight. The scariest thing was worried about getting caught, and we did. I'd like to go back sometime and get inside. I guess they have tours you can take for 20$, but i don't want to go only on the first floor, i want them to take me to the 4th....where it's suppossed to be haunted. My ex bf's dad used to be the coroner there during the t.b. outbreak, i think it's very interesting. I'm glad i found this site so i can show everyone in my hometown in michigan....the building i was on the roof of.

Hi, For the most information about the place I recommend joining the Yahoo groups agskentucky. This is the group site for Louisville Ghost Hunters Society, they are in and around the building constantly and give the tours. The tower is closed off now since someone fell through the floor up there. You can see it through a hole in the 5th floor ceiling but can't access it any longer. Although if you stand outside at night and watch you can see it's former residents walking around up there all night. As for the blurred video, this month they have a prtion of the first floor open for a Haunted House, chances are this has the permanent residents a tad stirred up. I have spent a lot of time talking to some LGHS people, doesn't surprise me that you picked up spectors outside the building since the old hospital and the former black hospital were torn down. Those have nowhere else to go!

I have been to Waverly, many times. I was born and raised in Louisville (J-town) and am so happy to see a pic of the old place! It was one of my favorite places to visit late at night with a group of my friends. I couldn't get enough of it! I eventually had to introduce new people to the experience as the ones I would go with all were to scared to return! Did you find the room with the clean unbroken walls that have in spray paint saying "There is a gun pointed at your head right now." Or see the trailer out back where the carekeeper/watchperson lives? Or get to the belltower type thing on top? Or the huge balconies on the back of the building? Or the secret passages narrow and winding through the rooms? Or how about the tunnel? I love this place as it is plain to see and enjoy comparing notes on it. Last night at around 2:00 am myself and three others went to the hospital and took a video camera and tried to sort of document our little adventure on the way up the hill we recorded the 3/4 moon and a side view of the hospital. Once we made it to the top we stopped for a moment to get some panoramic shots of the entire building we also stopped in the woods on the way out to get siome final thoughts from every one. But once we arrived back in Lexington around 4;30 and tried to watch the tape, the shots on our way up to the hospital and after we had left the grounds of the sanitarium were fine but all of the footage that was taken of and around the building was obsecured and had streeks of light in them. Even the film that was taken in the woods on the way down was obscured. The only thing that wasn't messed up was the audio. Just to make sure nothing was wrong with the camera we recorded for few minutes at my house and everything was fine.So i am not sure what happened but something was very odd about the whole thing because when we recourded on top of the hill all the images were fine in the side panel were you can watch as you recorde

I visited the Waverly on monday Aug 11, finding the place was a tough enough task. After climbing up a hill I came to the opening which is located in the back of the monstrous building. This is the closest thing to a European Castle I think I will ever see. The mere sight of it leaves you speechless. I'm looking forward to going back again soon.

Hey there, Tonight I watched a Documentary on the Sanitorium, and it was on a show called, "Scariest Places on Earth", and the part that kinda freaked me out was when the girls heard and saw the sliding bed or something slid out when one of the girls pushed it in, and after that before they left they heard something and saw that the bed was slid out, we'll it didn't freak me out,but I would want to stay in that place but without cameras,because I think that it is the cameras and pictures or something that P*SSES off the ghosts and i'm the kinda girl that likes stuff like this,but somethings freak me out, but not really stuff like this!! buh bye

The photos are incredible! I visited this year during one of the late night historical tours. I found the place to be oppressive, but that may have been memories from 1964, when our school went there Christmas Caroling. I thought the place with all of the institutional green was ugly then. I believe that my reaction was triggered, in part, from the condition of the building. The pagan that everyone seems worried about did not mention what time of day she had been there or if she was picking up visual clues. Women tend to pick up the subliminal clues easier than men do. The windows in the stairwell and unlit corridors did more to scare me than the presence of any otherworldy being. Actually, the group I was with did not find anything strange, other than the fully charged camera battery going down by half on one corridor. (Ok, so I admit I was carrying and fingering a Rosary quite a bit of the time.) My friends and I had the pleasure of talking the the guide after the tour and I could visualize this building refurbished as a resort type hotel, with attached museum. A place of great beauty. You had to see the back of the building by the full moon! WOW! To correct the one person, Hazelwood was across from Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, not on Dixie. My Mother worked at this location when it was Geriatrics Center.

Your pictures of Waverly are great I went a couple of weeks ago and was blown away by the place. I actually experienced some paranormal activity, I still would have like to seen a little bit more with the naked eye. I think they should really try hard to preserve it if souls are still tied up with the place they should at least have a nice place to stay. They also need to have more tours year round and more publicity, I think it could bring revenue to the Louisville area. Keep up the great work.

I went to Waverly on the 22nd,got 45 min. of video footage inside and out,I took the paranormal tour and found waverly to be a very exciting and interesting/educational place .Must tell what happened to my freinds video camera in room 502,[which i might add my camera did not]video tapping in room 502 ,when he enters the room his video goes fuzzy and the audio has a popping sound.The audio was so fuzzy nothing can be made out,he exits the room ,the camera is fine ,out of curiosity he goes back in...Same response.I was glad to have the opputunity to get some personal video footage from inside and out,but believe me no pics or video footage will ever do Waverly Hills Sanitorium justice, it is in my opinion a must see to truly appreciate and believe!!!! I was at Waverly on the 20th for the paranormal tour. All of the pictures that I took while the "energy meter" (for lack of the proper term)came out blank, like no picture was taken at all. Does anyone know if this is "normal"? Thanks.

The historians who do the historical tour are all paranormal investigators as well as security guards at Waverly. We have all had our own "encounters" as well as being familiar with the popular stories and paranormal investigation standards. The main difference is that we all love the building and it's history, and have spent alot of time and effort researching to seperate fact from fiction. Our tours do include paranormal information, we just tend to focus more on historical facts. If you signed up at the haunted house, my wife will be calling soon (most likely tomorrow). If you would prefer the paranormal tour, just let her know. She can put you in touch with the people who do those. I'm glad you liked the haunted house. Thanks for your contribution. John

My friends and I went up for the haunted house this weekend. It was fabulous! In fact, while we were there, we signed up for the tour. I am excited to see if anything happens when we go back. I think we are going on the paranormal tour, but does anyone know how that one differs from the historical tour?

Hi everyone. I just discovered this gallery about Waverly Hills, and was wondering if anyone heard anything about a story I was told by my boss. This supposedly happened last Halloween to a radio announcer that was broadcasting from Waverly. I just read a few of the messages from the board. It's nice to see all the favourable comments about this remarkable spot. I've been to the facility and I guess I have a "shred" of paranormal abilities because I've never felt the kind of attraction or received the feelings like I did on this trip. It seems as though an aura is "cying out" to let contemporary society know that this place was a special spot where lots of emotion was generated. Good, bad, lonely, helplessness, grief, fear, elation, you name it! I don't believe in ghosts and have never seen anything personally to make me believe there are, however if their are spirts this place certainly has them! It's not all bad or errie, it's just a cry out I take it to remember the human suffering that took place and that we should keep this place as a momument.The Pagan who says to stay away seems a selfish one, if indeed the "spirits" are there and asking for something someone should try to listen. There are no demons there. I would also like to see these posts from visitors from out of town and tell how far you came to see it and what it was that drew you to Waverly, so be sure to include this in your posts if you are someone that came a distance just to see it. Absolutely love the pics! I have always been fascinated by the paranrmal and the stories revolving around Waverly. This weekend, I've finally talked my friends into venturing up there for the haunted house! I'm also interested in going on the tours as well, as long as I can bring my camera. Does anyone know if cameras are allowed on the tours?

The haunted house at Waverly is open : Thursday----8p.m. to midnight Friday------8p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday----8p.m. to 1 a.m. The cost is 15 dollars per person. The body chute is 5 dollars extra. The tours of Waverly are running Sunday thru Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. The cost is 20 dollars per person. The body chute tour is included in this tour. The Historic tours start at 5 p.m. , with the last Historic tour being at 6:45. The Paranormal tours start at 7 p.m., with the last tour starting at 11 p.m. The tours are set up by appointment. Hi all. I am a security guard at Waverly and I also worked there when it was a nursing home. The haunted house times are Thurs, Fri and Sat 8pm til 1am and the cost of $15 is being split into charities (like the Crusade for Children etc, and to Waverly). Come on up druing these times and you will love it! The haunted house is changing/adding things each weekend and runs until Nov 2nd. They are also giving tours Sun thru Wed each week 8pm until midnight I believe but Im not sure of the price. Please respect Waverly and the owners and Security and the volunteers and have a great time. The owners are putting heart and soul as well as many others into restoring Waverly back to her glory! The spirits of Wavery are ok with everyone being there...they dont mind as long as you do! The rules that is :-) Cindy

I went to Waverly Hills last night. They are giving tours on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays during the month of October. All tours are at night. This is separate from the "haunted house." I went on a historical tour, but they also have a paranormal tour. The cost is $20.00 per adult and $5.00 per child 12 and under. It was awesome to be in there again. I was there when I was 8 to sing Christmas caroles to the patients when it was a nursing home. It looks much different now. We didn't see anything strange, but we did smell blueberry muffins in the kitchen area.

Those pictures are beautiful but im sorta torn between going there and not going there. My sneces are very easily triggered by the paranormal and I read the warning from the pagan person and it sorta shoots me in the heart cause I too have been doing pagan for a few years. I wanna go to the halloween thing but at the same time i feel guilty for tresspassing on those souls' home. I have a great respect for the dead and undead and semidead so I dont know what to do. I need some advice, anyone mind steering me in a certain direction?

Awesome pics. I always wanted to go there but I never had the guts to go by myself and my friends are all too chicken. I wish I could hook up with someone thats going so I can finaly get to get some shots of it. I heard that sometimes you can get a picture of a chick in a window someplace. Did you see anything like that while you were there? I heard it was hard to find and the woods are hella freaky but I still wanna go there and maybe even get some night shots. That would be so cool.

do NOT go up to waverly if you have a shred of psychic ability. the suffering and death have soaked into the soil itself. i have been a practicing pagan since i was 14 and have never felt anything like this place, not even on the site of the most heinous unsolved double murder in new orleans' sordid history. waverly is home to spirits and a strong nonhuman entity that has taken shape from the years of anguish and death. i repeat, do NOT go up to waverly hills tb sanitorium if you have ANY psychic ability whatsoever, if you've ever had a strong hunch that was right or if you've ever felt a nameless "something" brushing your awareness...DON'T GO.

I learned about Waverly after a trip to louisville and love places like this. I'm sad to see all the vandalism to the place but overal it still has a wonderful feel just from the stories I have heard. I'm trying to track down all the info I can on this place, including floor plans, but I havnt been able to get my hands on floor plans of the entire place, just some olderones when it had a different name. I've even contacted the louisville ghost hunter society thinkin they might know and had no success, anyone know where I can find this info? the local records office didnt have anything to help me either when I was out there.

I have been up there tons of times, when my friends were driving around being stupid, wanting to see "Ghosts" which really displeased me, I am very interested in the old hospital, and would love to one day go up and doctument it, I am very interested in paranormal activity and what not, and this place just caught my attention....mainly because I to am a carrier of the TB. The place just has a special place in my heart. Only time I have been inside was last year when they turned it into a haunted house for holloween, I don't really believe in that, and wasn't going to go, But it was like I really wanted to see the inside of it, to get the feel of what it was like to be in that place with so much energy, The place was amazing.... I mean you could just feel so much there! If you really took time out and just there I mean even outside of the building its like it spoke to you....Hopefully one day if I ever get intouch with the owner I can have a better look without any disruptions from people with chainsaws haha Lisa 17, Louisville Kentucky

Waverly Hills (the building) is not being turned into a paintball course, it has paintball fields behind it where some of the old Pavillion buildings used to stand. The owners are going to be opening for tours as soon as they can get the permits. I am helpng them gather information about the history of the hospital and the people who lived, worked, and died there. Anyone interested in contributing info or just reading what I have gathered, feel free to contact me for a link to my message board. ps. The date is Mar 2 2002 About 3 weeks ago I was up at Waverly Hills. It is now privately own by a group of people that is converting it into a paintball field. Im sure some folks will have mixed feelings about this (I play paintball and enjoy historical sites) but because of the vandals damage Waverly was too far gone for restoration. This way at least it will not be torn down.

I used to live real close to Waverly Hills, and recall it as an old peoples home. The grounds where still fairly nice at that time (the 1970s), and the foreign language students at nearby Jesse Stuart high school used to sing Christmas carols there for the old folks. Great views over the valley to the Indiana hills. The place was like a gothic castle towering over Pleasure Ridge and Valley Station...a real massive building with tower. The place was fun to ride bikes around as the twisting road to Dixie was pretty good to coast down, as was the back road towards Bobby Nichols golf course (which is how I got there). There used to be a number of other abandoned buildings on the site in the 1970s, which where torn down. There also used to be a "bone dump" in a hollow behind the sanitorium (on the golf course side), and, of course, that abandoned tunnel from the main building to the powerhouse/steam plant, which us kids explored once.

I have been on several photographic journeys of Waverly Hills from 1990-1994. I have done a lot of research on the hospital and it's medical history.I have several photographs, including the underground steam tunnel.I definately have a connection to Waverly Hills because I too am in the medical field (Paramedic). Thanks for your comments. The place has changed a lot since the last time you've probably been there. The "death tunnel" is boarded up as well as the entire building and a lot of bulldozing and such around the grounds. I am in NY for college so can't take any more pictures but Waverly just got into Fox's 100 top scariest places in the world. There is actually a very informative website from a security guard that works at waverly. I lost the http but i'm sure you can hunt it down with google.com with some keywords.

I've visited this place many times, starting in the '70s when my friends and I walked up the "death tunnel" which was used to transport corpses to waiting hearses at the bottom of the hill. That was one of the scariest journeys of my life. I think that the geriatric center closed well before 1980, as we explored there in '76 and '77 and it was deserted and very eerie. It's a lonely and fascinating place, and I hope that the new owners will undo the harm and total disregard for history that the previous owners had for it. The previous owners originally bought the property with the vision of tearing it down and building a 300 ft statue of Jesus on the hill. I'd like to see this gallery expanded to show more of the grounds. The steam plant at the bottom of the hill, the "death tunnel", more of the interior, and especially the fabled room 502.
