Eurasia and North-Africa. Widely introduced worldwide.
The following 12 subspecies are being recognized:
Passer domesticus domesticus - Most of Europe east to Sakhalin and Kamchatka. Widely introduced elsewhere;
Passer domesticus balearoibericus - Balearic Island, southern France, the Balkans and Anatolia;
Passer domesticus tingitanus - North-Africa, from Morocco to Libya;
Passer domesticus niloticus - Along the river Nile in Egypt and Sudan;
Passer domesticus biblicus - Middle East, from Cyprus and southern Turkey to the Sinai and Kuwait;
Passer domesticus persicus - West- and Central-Iran;
Passer domesticus indicus - South-Israel and Arabia to India and western Southeast-Asia. Introduced in eastern Africa;
Passer domesticus hyrcanus - Southern coast of Caspian Sea, from Gorgan to Azerbaijan;
Passer domesticus bactrianus - Southern Kazakhstan, northern Iran and Afghanistan;
Passer domesticus parkini - Western Himalayas, from Pamir Mountains to Southeast-Nepal;
Passer domesticus rufidorsalis - Sudan, North-Ethiopia to Eritrea. Introduced to Mohéli in the Comoros;
Passer domesticus hufufae - Northeastern-Arabia.
