Breeds Holarctic. Worldwide coastal post-breeding dispersal.

The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Calidris alba alba - Ellesmere Island, Greenland, Svalbard to Taymyr. Winters to Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia;
Calidris alba rubida - Northeast-Siberia, Alaska and North-Canada. Winters to East-Asia, coastal North, Central and South America.
