Australia (Southwest), 12 July - 13 August 2023

Fatbirder's Top 1000 Birding Websites

After our succesfull trip to Australia in 2016 we decided to visit another part of the continent.
Obligated to go during the (northern) school holiday it became an Austral winter journey to Southwest-Australia,
where we stayed from July 12th untill August 13th, 2023.

The first half of our journey (roughly 2 weeks) we focussed on the endemic birdspecies south of Western Australia's
capital Perth. We started with some days in downtown Perth and then travelled southeast towards Dryandra Woodland,
Stirling Range and Fitzgerald River National Parks. That was our most eastern point of interest and from there we travelled
west towards Cheynes Beach, Porongurup National Park, the Valley of the Giants and eventuelly the most southwestern tip
of mainland Australia: Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. A few days later we passed Perth again on our way north.

The second half of our journey (some 2,5 weeks) we wanted to explore some of the outback.
As we prefer not to fly during our holiday, we drove from Perth northeast and explored the area around
Mt Gibson, Paynes Find, Mount Magnet and Cue. A completely different world compared to the area south of Perth!
After a week or so we drove west towards coastal Western Australia, meeting the Indian Ocean as north as Carnarvon.
From there we drove south towards Perth again, visiting Francois Peron, Kalbarri, Nambung and Yanchep National Parks along the way.

Our trip was again succesfull seeing 220 native birdspecies in total (including all the SW-WA's endemic species)
and most of our targeted mammalspecies (including my most wanted: Numbat). Being there in the Austral winter,
other animalgroups such as reptiles and butterflies, were less visible, although we did see a few species.
