Fish Tank 1- Convict Cichlid, Green Terror, and Jack Dempsey

My college roommate and I started this tank in the fall of 2003. By the start of the spring semester we had settled on a Green Terror, Convict Cichlid, Jack Dempsey, and a Ramshorn Snail. Over the course of the past four years the tank has been moved four times and the fish have all died except for the Green Terror, which is still growing. My roommate has the tank now, but I took some pictures pictures during my last visit for New Year's. (updated January 2008)

i supposedly have a pink convict and a jack demspsey and they had babies but th pet store says they are both convcts is it possible for them to have babies those too type of fish and i know it is a jack dempsey my son took it out of the tank at the fish store that said tht is what it was can you let me know if that is possible for them to have babies

For some of you asking about growing them and breeding sizes:

Convicts in particular are incredibly easy to breed, and will do it at a young age. I have had some of mine grow from newborn fry to a couple of inches long in about 3-4 months, and then have young of their own. The amount of space you give them will have a big effect on how they grow. I have convicts from the same batch of fry in a 10 gallon and in a 33 gallon, and the ones in the 33 are many times the size. (although i did select the largest ones out of the 10 gallon to move over initially) I have also found that if you separate males and females in a group tank they will grow much faster. These fish in the 33 gallon that exploded in size are all males.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the convicts get extremely aggressive while breeding. I have seen a pair of small convicts risk their lives to fight with a 10 inch midas that has killed quite a few fish in her life. Any fish that are not MUCH MUCH larger than the convicts will be chased, beaten up, and very stressed in my experience.

i have 55 gal and i was planning on 3 convicts (1 male, 2 female) 2 firemouths (male ,female) and i was wondering if a male and female GT would fit into that mix and the tank.

I have a green terror but it is still a baby .I dont know wheather it will be just like the pics you are having

I also have the same mix but with 3 convicts (1 male - 2 females), a jag., and 2 other eclipse catfish. The Green Terror is not to be messed with. Even though they are all in a 125 gal. they still fight and the GT is always in the mix. The large male convict is head of the house hold - for now!

I have a 30 gallon tank with 2 firemouths 2 JDs, 1 black convict, and 1 red blood parrot the convict is your "october size" The Jds are slightly smaller than the "november size", The fire mouths match the Jds and the red blood parrot is as big as the november Terror. They are living on live food, "cichlid grow" and dried krill. how long do you think it will be to reach A. their breeding size, and B. Their max size?(assuming that the smaller ones die off)

Fire Mouths might be a good combination in a tank with convicts if the tanks big enough

hey im new with convict cichlids. I cant get a straight answer from anyone about what fish i should match with a pair in a 50 gallon tank. If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appriciated! Nice tank, although i think your convict is is getting stressed out from the larger fish. I am saying this because I had my convict in a tank with a red devil for a few hours just to see how aggressive the red devil was and of course the red devil kept chasing the convict around trying to kill it. During that hour my convict turned a blackish color. I also find this happens when your tank has bad water quality from forgeting to do water changes.

I would imagine that the babies would be fine, but I'm not really sure how they will be colored. My only suggestion is to go to the forum on cichlids.com and post your question.

I have a male stripped and female albino that have paired up....will the breed okay given the color difference and what babies can I exspect? If you dont know the anmswers, do you know some who does, someone maybe a book in genetics?

I've mostly fed cichlid flakes, cichlid pellets, and cichlid sticks. The Green Terror has gone from about an inch to about 6-7 inches in a little over two years. I was hoping it would grow faster.

Very nice picture of Green Terror,

I have a question, it seems like that during march 03 and november 05 your fish has grown 2-3 inches. What did you normally feed these guys and are the growth rate for these fish slow??

Because I'm trying to grow my Jack D. and Green terror, both of which are about 2 inches long, into 8-9 inch fish. How long do you think this will take?? Should I just feed them life food??

we have 2 jack dempseys we moved them all too a larger tank, them 2 started being all lovie dovie kissen rubbing on each other , started being very terrortorial to 2 differnt spots the female turned black , but would go back to grey several times a day but now she is staying all black , and is mean she chases all the fish a round, we thought maybe him n her was has trying to lay eggs but havent seen any sign of them , can you give us any advise? she is the only one in the tank that reacted like this

hi fella

i have a convict pair who r breeding but saindly my jack and others are eating the eggs my jack is about 5 years old and is about 9 inches long i was told there were really vicious but i have lots of other small cichlids in there i even have a gouwarmi he has been in htere 4 about 6 mouths and he is fine keep your pics going on carl
