The Rinehart wedding seems to have lost a great deal of the memories associated with that event, is it the distain for the one member whom we know very little about his journey to attempt to prove to his family his devotion, so with a backpack only he traveled here, to seek out the ones he loved... The wedding was a beautiful time, but seems a little effort has gone into making sure no others see this? Heaven forbid prospects see she was loved? Or perhaps its just the man, who wants to understand,

Beth, you are so gifted with your photographic abilities!! I so admire the work you do...which is more a labor (if at all) of love. I have spent a great deal of time in Ogunquit and yearn to return...lots of great sites. Can you tell me what type of camera/lens you use? I would appreciate some insights since I use an old Asahi Pentax (which still takes fabulous pictures). Keep up the great work. Jim Rawlings, Bethlehem, PA.

Hi, I was looking for lighthouse photos to make cards and stumbled upon your website. Your photos are stupendous! I'm just an amateur photographer ( I carry my dinky digital everywhere)and I love your compositions, color, etc. Would I be able to copy two of your lighthouse photos to make note cards for my personal use?
Denisa (CNN journalist) 09-Nov-2010 11:30
Hello,

First of all, congratulations for your beautiful photos. My name is Denisa and I am a journalist at CNN London. I work for a project called Mainsail and we would like to make beautiful galleries of nice places to sail across the world. I have found some photos of yours that I would like to use. Please contact me on my email address and I will tell you which ones I am interested in.

Would you give us permission to use them in a photo gallery that will be published on the website cnn.com international edition?

Thank you very much in advance and I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
Denisa

I'dig into the photos shortly. Do you remember my sister Etta, she married Mike Bryant. He was a professional and graduated from many photo schools in NY, etc.
He has some great photos he has taken over the years. I'll send you a few.

Still glad we found each other after all these years.

Thank you from the whole Graafin family for coming down to Fitchburg and rooting us on! We so enjoyed our visit with you! The dogs in the line up group shot from left to right are "Kubbie", "Gunnarr", "Louie", & baby "Flynn" (in his show debut).

The photos are wonderful--and you have a real astute eye for composition I see in your other works.
See you next week!

Beth,
love your E-10/20 galleries.
I still pick mine up once in awhile to shoot a few frames; especially when I'm a little stale--gives me a fresh perspective and keeps me humble.

Enjoyed your architecture shots, door, windows, and stairs.

thanks! :)

Beth,
I grew up in South Portland and have been an ex-patriot for too many years. Your pictures have captured the essence of who I am and make me somewhat homesick. That is a great testament to the art side of your photography.
Thank you,

Hello Beth ~ Life has been a bit challenging lately. Then again - isn't that the case for most of us? When I sit down at the computer and see the list of "favorites' - the first click is to your photography. I call my husband upstairs and show him these awesome photographs. What's accomplished? We spend time together, relax and recall memories in Maine. Your photography makes a long-distance difference!
Gayle 09-Jun-2009 23:50
My father lived in North Yarmouth. Every visit he wanted us to see something for "the first time". Whether Cape Elizabeth or Bar Harbor - the 'moment' remains forever in my heart. Sadly he passed away in February 2008. These spectacular Maine photographs have reminded me of the time we spent together. Thank you, so much, for capturing the essence of "The Way Life Should Be". Looking forward to more memorable images! Gayle

I started working summers at Duquese Blast Furnaces as a Labor in 1969-70. When I graduated college 1971 I went to work in DPC Conditioning and Heat Treating as a Mgt. Trainee. I then was assigned to Conditioning at National Wks an be came asst. Gen. Foreman. From there to Duquesne Works 46" Mill Foreman, Soaking Pits and Stripper. Then the end came when I was transfered to Homestead Wks. on the 45" Mill as foreman Pits, Mill and Shipping. April 1984 I was let go with 13.3 years.
Mike Bilcsik 01-Nov-2007 20:50
I started in the Blast Furnace as a Motor Inspector in January 1963.
On my first day I had to find my own way from the Whitfield Street gate to the Blast Furnace Maintenance Dept. under the boiler house. It was 6:00am and still dark outside as I walked behind #1 furnace which was casting at the time. It reminded me of Dante's hell. I almost turned around and walked back out, but I didn't because my father, who was a blast furnace retiree, was so proud that I obtained such a good job.
I stayed until the mill closed.
Guest 01-Nov-2007 19:41
I worked in the Blast Furnace as a Motor Inspector from 1963 until the mill shut down.
My father worked in the same Blast Furnace Department and retired on disability years before I started.
My dad contracted "red lung" from working in the stockyard. The company denied his disability claim, even when he was on assisted breathing.
Mike Bilcsik 01-Nov-2007 19:25
Hi Beth, This is Mike Bilcsik. I was a Motor Inspecter in the Blast Furnace and your union rep. I can't place you unless this is Beth Destler. If it is, or even if it isn't, I look forward hearing from you. If you're another Beth, jog my mind.

I took scores of 35mm photos with the union hall camera, took them home when the union
hall closed, and kept them in a box where everything became jumbled. Eventually I dropped them of at the Steel Heritage building in Homestead. I never heard from them so who knows what they did with them. If you're interested in photos from Duquesne Works union activities, including the Save Dorothy campaign, you should see them.
I'm off now to explore your Duquesne Works Gallery. Thanks for providing it.

BETH, Thank you for the great site and all the work that I know you do putting and keeping it together. I grew up in the hill district, worked at old Forbes Field as a kid, and Pitt Stadium. Also worked down town at Harris Florists, Fort Pitt Hardware Co.
Sure nice to reminisce through your photos. I left there in the forties, have been back often to follow my teams, all from that area. My dad used to tell me to "Keep your eye on the Steelers" He did not make it to see them in the Seventies, and what about now? At any rate thank you for the memories.

Thank you so much for the beautiful pictures. We are getting married in Pittsburgh, hopefully at Trinity Cathedral, and your art helped us capture the magic of the place to share with others. I went to college in Pittsburgh and I miss the city but your pictures brought back many wonderful memories. Thanks again.

As so often happens I dropped on your site by accident. I come originally from Sheffield in the UK, it used to be Britain's most important steel producing city and now it's gone the way of much of the North East USA. Although the work was dangerous, dirty and polluting it seemed to have a soul unlike the retail parks and malls that have sprung up on the sites. Thanks for the pictures, very atmospheric.
Sherry Campbell 28-May-2004 16:47
I love your style and sensitivity..really speaks to me and reminds me how much I love Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania--especially on those days I think about moving to Arizona. I know how much I'd miss this place. You capture the emotional tug of the place so very well.

Beth,

I am a good friend of Tara, and she sent me your link. Your work is just beautiful. I love the emotions captured through your photography. I especially love the harbor at dusk photo and the one of the little boy with his arms spread as if he is going to fly. They are all unique.

Hello Beth,

I have 2 old copies of photo's by Curtis. One is of a Cheif on horse and the other is of an older lady. I didn't see them in your gallery of pictures. I love to paint and I would like to know how I can get permission (if that is necessary) to paint Curtis's photo's in case I want to have the paintings reproduced for sale. Do you know who I would have to contact?

I appreciated your gallery of pictures and would like to know how I can get copies of some of them?

Thank you for any info you can give me.

Best regards,
Lillian

I stumbled across these photos and they made my wife & I very homesick. We spend 1/2 the year in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, where we both grew up. What wonderful photos you have posted that remind us it's time to go back to the north Atlantic coast.

I've just purchased a Canon D10 and am getting started taking photos.

Hi Beth,
Thank you for the nice comments on my galleries.
For the last year and a half I have been greatly inspired by your work when you first used the Oly e20n. I have an Oly c2100 and a year ago I had posted on the dpreview forum if I was ready of the e20. You were first to respond and told me I was ready.
I bought the e20n in February and I love it.
I am an amateur as you can see in my work. It still needs quality but watching works of fine photographers like you is helping me a great deal.
Thank you for the encouragement and inspiration.

I think your photos are really great. I am from Pennsylvania and have been living with my family in China for many years. I am an English teacher in a remote part of the country. Thank you so very much for sharing your great work! I am a retired Air Force photographer and haven't picked up the camera for an outing in quite some time. You fixed that! I also recently bought a camera system for my seventeen year old daughter who has become very interested in making photographs. I know your pictures will be an inspiration for her and wonderful examples of very high standards in many different environments.
Thank Goodness for the internet! Amen!

Beth,

I happened to stumble into this website and noticed your quite exquisite images of Pittsburgh. Some of the photo are stunning. And that s from a 'non-photographer'. My request to you is may I, on behalf of The American Society Of Highway Engineers (ASHE), Pittsburgh Section, use some of your photos for our non-profit website? We would use no more than 10 (so many to pic from!!) and give you full credit, as you well deserve it.

Thank you in advance for your consideration,

Craig

Beth,
Nice try, but you are investing too much in peripherals and taking away power of jewelry and that's what you want to sell?/merchandise?

Use color sense to support primary colors of jewelry to give jewelry sparkle and instant eye appeal.
I would mute the leaf, blurring its borders so the sharp features of the ring bring in the eyes.

I was extremely impressed with the professionalism visible in the talent of your shot taking. At the age of 43 I am new to digital photography for almost a year. Currently a proud owner of the Olympus C-2100 'UZI' and the Olympus E-100RS. What cameras do you use? I am considering an upgrade to a higher mp camera with the intent to take the hobby to the next level. Collecting digital photos has also become a past time. Your pictures are beautiful and you obviously have a passion for it as well based on the size of your pbase galleries. Do you do a lot of digital editing and what program do you recommend. Thank you for an enjoyable journey and for any help or guidance you might pass along. Especially what camera to upgrade to or if I need to upgrade at all! God Bless!!!

I felt that digital imaging was very different from conventional photography and after purchasing the E-10 and using it (only 2 weeks, so far) I think that I was correct! Your article was instrumental in helping me make my decision regarding the E-10 and thank you for that. I am an avid Canon fan and have a complete Canon film system. I will continue to use that system for "film" imaging but I didn't feel that the D-60 offered me what I was looking for in a digital imaging system.
I thoroughly enjoy your posted images on PhotoSig together with your user friendly articles.
Thank you, again.

Thanks for sharing your photos.

You have some really nice pics in your gallery, particularly those that use a good deal of color. Of all your pics I enjoyed 'Fantasy come true' , 'Bug on Window' and 'Irony' the most. Both have great lighting, and capture color well.

If you are interested, I would desire to do a print exchange with you, or if not then feel free to just stop by my gallery anyway. Comments are always welcome, so much so that I tend to beg. More information on Print exchanges can be found at my gallery.

Dear Beth-- Wonderful 'eye' and quality. Is this the E-10? I'm thinking of the E-20 and have been checking different galleries. Thanks. Ron

if RAW what software are you using to convert from RAW to a file useable in PhotoShop ?

I was using Qimage Pro but I think that software has been damaging the data in my RAW files during conversion, damaging as in destroy some of the dta IOW The images look soft in focus and in contrast. I am now shooting TIFF instead of RAW. What files are you shooting with ?????

Hi Beth!

Just wanted to drop a quick note to say I returned to your gallery to see what you've been up to! You are something else! Your photos, as I anticipated, as excellent. I am certain now that I have no talent whatsoever, haha.

Thanks again for sharing your artistic perceptions!

Hi Beth,

Your pictures of Pittsburgh are wonderful! I would love to correspond with you about possibly using some on the About Pittsburgh Web site http://pittsburgh.about.com). If you are interested, please contact me at pittsburgh.guide@about.com. My husband and I both love to take pictures and love Pittsburgh and it is great to see someone else putting photos online to share our beautiful city with the world :-)

Keep up the great work!

Hi Beth:
I am a new owner of an Olympus Camedia C-700 10X.

I would like to get a program for my computer whereas I can transfer my pictures into the directory. I do not even know how to do that. I have put some pictures into the Adobe photo but they come up with a picture of a pail of paint on it and I have to click on it to see what it is. They are all saved into my documents.

Where and how can I get some help to build a nice thumbnail directory for my pictures.?

Greetings Beth,

It has been awhile since I visited your exceptional web site. Has the opening quote: "For me, photography is a way to share a vision or tell a story. It is a way to push, cajole and raise important questions." always been there?

It also captures my passion...my vision for my photography. Thanks for saying it so well...you've been blessed with many Gifts! Your photos keep getting better-and-better. I appreciate your insights on the Oly Forum.

Kind regards,

Hello, Beth-

My name is Nola Blanton, and I am a graphic designer in TX. I
am in the process of designing an environmental brochure for the
College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Texas, and I'd
like to use your image 'yellow in the mud' in it. Nice work!

The brochure would include a copyright credit for the image with your name. Please let me know if it would okay to include your image. I won't use the image without first obtaining your permission.

Thanks for your consideration!

Hi Drew,
Glad you enjoyed the Pittsburgh/Moraine photos. I've had a lot of fun taking them and have done so to share with family far away AND for myself when I leave the area. It IS a wonderful place, isn't it?

Please visit often as I post new shots weekly...always check the "What's UP" gallery first as that's where the new stuff goes first.

Really enjoyed your photographs, especially since I'm originally from the Pittsburgh area. I used to live in Zelienople and often rode by Moraine State Park. Your pictures made me want to go home again. I sent your site address to my brother who is living in London, England.

Sincerely,

Beth,

Thank you for sharing, I just had the pleasure of looking through your gallery, usually I only glance at the thumbs of most, but your photos captured my interest. I like how you took the time to caption your photos. Excellent work!

Beth, Thank you for sharing your photography. I do not usually have the nerve to leave comments on other peoples
work, but yours struck me somehow. The 'New War' series is particularly interesting, and have bookmarked it to see
what develops in the future. Anyhow, thanks for the inspiration, and Happy New Year!

Hi Beth,
Congratulations for the latest developments of your "New American War" series: it's taking shape and turning into a great subject! The more I look at your pictures, the more I admire your skills as a photographer... plus your remarkable talent at writing captions: some of them are so ironic, some others so funny!
The most important is the way you sense and transmit the atmosphere, the mood of things (I don't know if it's the right expression, but anyway you'll understand what I mean). I have been thrilled once again, and I am looking forward to further developments, whatever kind of subject matters you choose - you already know how much I appreciated the "Rusty Belt" series and so many other pictures... Please, keep going, I can't get enough!
If I didn't already know that the talent of the photographer has much more to do with the quality of the results than any technical specification, I guess I would sell my own camera and buy an E-10 (or 20)...
Thanks again

Excellent photo! I am also a new E-10 user. I would be interested in seeing a larger version of your church photo(Glacier National Park). Here's a few of my images...http://public.fotki.com/RiskTaker9/bill_siegrist_e-10/
