January 29 2008:
Depression

Knaphill

Suffering myself, I am constantly amazed at the number of people I come across who suffer from depression. In fact, I see some kind of correlation between those who are creative and those who get caught by this.

I read this article in the Daily Telegraph today, and it went on to say that depression hits a peak in middle age, so maybe there is hope for us when we get older!

I’m actually off to my weekly depression group tonight which is surprisingly lively – I thought at first it would be full of grey people with long faces.

You mean it'll get worse in the next 9 years? :-(

Great composition and lighting Ray. It's always nice to see raised awareness of mental health issues.

I'd be very happy to be only 44! LOL! Hope the group works for you all!
Guest 30-Jan-2008 06:01
Well, showing that 44 is an average ;-)
Your processing is appropriately dark for the subject, and grainy as the paper.
Guest 30-Jan-2008 04:25
Say it isn't so! That's me in 3 years,Ray...but it should pick up after that. Hooray.
I like the grain and the wave here, somehow emphasizing the depression.

I'm there this year. I do hope for brighter days Ray.

I'm past that age so I'm good to go?? Depression does hurt...I pray it goes away from you and everyone else who suffers from it!
Guest 29-Jan-2008 21:19
Love the grain and mood of this shot.

Aw, bugger. I was feeling OK until I saw this :-(

I'm not sure I'm encouraged by Nicky's comment about happiness starting at 70!
royalld29-Jan-2008 20:15
I have been through that cycle. I started enjoying life again at about age 48/49. I am 61 now; and I'm the happiest I have ever been.

So much truth to this. I started to suffer in my mid 40's. The whole creative thing is true as well. And coming to terms with the fact that I was not alone was the biggest life saver.
SRW29-Jan-2008 19:49
I think you're right... -- let's hope that easing out of middle age is the answer, then!
Nicki Thurgar29-Jan-2008 19:47
I read a similar article today... but once you get to your fifties it lifts... a few more years then! ;o) And real happiness starts around 70! :o)
Johnny JAG29-Jan-2008 19:16
Thankfully I have no creative ability whatsoever, I feel for those of you who have.
Lee Rudd29-Jan-2008 19:09
there is hope for me yet!
