Well this one stands out instantly as a favorite for me. I love the out of focus background, the sombre light, the scratching, and the overall mood.

D'oh! I should really read all the way to the bottom of comments (no matter how many there are). Lensbaby? What is a Lensbaby?
Bravo...There isn't a great photographer in the world who wasn't a master in the darkroom as well as behind the lens. PS is just a digital darkroom - it's the necessary tool of the modern trade.

I can't get over this shot. I can't decide if it's a marvelously lucky capture (it's the first of yours I've opened) or if it's post processed (nothin' wrong with that). I think it might be a scuffed up plexiglass window on a bus shelter maybe, or ??!! Tell us! Share with us your technique master.

Guest 17-Mar-2006 17:45

Chuck, this is fantastic. It got my vote. The image is "lost" on so many levels. It is here, but gone and we are with this idea however fleeting. I deserve NONE of the credit. Just glad to share some resources and then your eye and imagination/creativity DID the work.--Rene

wow, thanks for all the comments...sounds like this one's a keeper? ;-)

Actually, I owe a large thank you to Rene Haleshttp://www.pbase.com/halesr for learning the PS work to make this image appear aged as it does. Most of you are probably already familiar with her images...some of the best PS work on Pbase.

I struggled with posting this aged photo because it cleary crossed a line with the project where the processing became a much larger part of the story versus just having the scene speak for itself. However, my final opinion rests with the fact that the processing enhances the story without overwhelming it. That's a fine balance to acheive, I think, because it puts an image very close to becoming gimmicky if it's not done right.

For those who are interested, the image is from Chicago, taken on an overcast day with a lensbaby and then processed in PS using "scratch brushes" to give the aging effect. My normal process of creating the color and tones applies here as in all the other images in this gallery.

Agree with Chris... Have come back to this later in the day to see if it appears any different now... man what a shot. Chuck, this deserves to be seen by every user on pbase.
Guest 24-Jan-2006 12:49
Beautiful shot, perhaps the finest I've seen on Pbase in months. Processing, toning, composition, all perfectly realized. V.
