Origine : Chine. Le Ginkgo est le plus vieil arbre reconnu :
il existe depuis 200 millions d'années (on dit qu'il est un "fossile vivant",
unique témoin d'une époque très éloignée).
Inconnu du monde occidental, il fut " découvert " au Japon,
vers 1700, par Engelbert Kaempfer, médecin de la Compagnie des Indes néerlandaises.
Planté pour la première fois en Europe à Utrecht en 1730, puis à Kew Gardens, en 1754.

The Ginkgo biloba is the world's oldest living tree,
a species whose existence can be traced back-over 250 million years!
For this reason, the Ginkgo was referred to as living fossil (1859)
by Charles Darwin. Ginkgo trees were common and widespread in Asia,
Europe and America but disappeared from America about 7 million years ago,
and from Europe about 3 million years ago.
Planted for the first time in Europe in Utrecht in 1730,
then at Kew Gardens, en 1754.
