Rhonda,
First let me say thank you for being there for your friend. This is a difficult thing to go through as well as support. I don't know what stage of the surgery so I will do my best to help.
If this is the first stage (actual flap surgery) it can be a very long operation. With that just being under for a period of time can have negative effects (stomach, leg cramps....). So be prepared for those things and a list of medications and numbers for the doctor in the event you should see any reactions. Do get the pain and other medications prior to leaving the hospital. I remember vividly having to walk in Chicago to find a pharmacy to fill mine as the pain meds wore off. Day two and three post op there was a lot more swelling and pain to the point my eyes would not open. So being there to assist with even the simplest of things will help. I was able to use cold compresses on the non open areas but it was all I could do to not pass out. Find what comforts your friend. You know them so just be there. I like lots of pillows and dim lights and soft Christian music. But sometimes when in pain I don't like anything so again be understanding. Don't be afraid to go out in public with your friend, encourage them to do so if doctor approves. It was hard for me to be in public with the flap and helped that a friend would go with for moral support.
Help with the dressings and cleanings as directed. It took a lot out of me the first few times and needed assurance I wasn't going to break the flap and if I did who would help if someone wasn't there.
Just be a friend. Someone to lean on and listen. Remember this to shall pass and healing will come.
I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers and your friend as well. Either of you are welcome to call or email me. I'm not a doctor, just someone who cares and has been on this journey.
Blessings,
Christine

My friend having this procedure done in the am. I would like to know how to help him. He will be staying in my home for a few days. Thank you for preparing me what to expect.

Thank you so much for your story. Your horrific ordeal and willingness to share it is much appreciated. I've got another crop of cancers on my face that should be harvested soon. I'll check back.

Thank you for your candid pictures and sharing your story. I have MOHS surgery tomorrow and reconstructive surgery the next day. I hope I can heal as well as you have and get this behind me.

I am having Mohs-on-the-nose tommorrow. After viewing your photos I feel prepared for whatever lies ahead. Being a 47 year old women who works outdoors, my skin has been a priority for years. Thank you for your story. .

Hi Christine I just came across your photos. I had a BCC removed from the temple on my head 5 days ago by Mohs surgery and have a large open circular wound about one and a half inches in diameter which is rather painful. I have been told I will need a skin graft in a couple of weeks time. I really don't know what to expect but it seems to me the skin graft is a darn sight more painful and unpleasant than the Mohs. Hope you are now feeling much better. Thanks for shring your experience. Liz, London England.

My husband has one on the side of his nose in the crease to his cheek. Just found out today. Your photos have helped me to prepare myself for what may be ahead. Thanks for posting them. I know it was a private thing you had to go through, but it will help others out here with the same problem. God Bless you and your family. CJ
