Red Headed Weaver |
Huge spider web spotted from far away. It was probably 3ft across. |
Here's the spider. |
Dikdiks. They are very small. They weigh 8-12 lbs and are 1 - 1 ¼ ft tall at the shoulder, |
Dikdiks are very fast and can hit top speed of up to 26 MPH in the first few jumps. Most are too quick to get picture |
And look what they do with their nose/snout. It's like it's sucked in. |
Dikdiks. I know it's blurry but this is what they look like running (flying!) away. |
This shy hippo only lifted his nostrils out of the water far enough to breathe. The nostrils closed again to go under the water. |
A jumbled herd of giraffe. |
A large herd of giraffe. |
This ellie is covered in the red dirt and has his ears flapping to scare us. Boo! |
Quite a catch! This Ground Hornbill has a snake AND a frog! |
Snake & frog. Snake is Elapsoidea species probably E. boulengeri. Rather rare - a type of burrowing cobra (according to Johan) |
A sleeping pride of lions can be kind of boring so I get closeups. |

Baby elephants are so cute! The baby is shorter than the bottom of mom's tail. |
Young mongooses (mongeese?) |

The lion is just resting in the tall grass . . . and along comes this |

Lion in the early morning. His mane is still wet with dew. |

The balloon takes of at 6:30 am. I wouldn't give up a game drive for a balloon ride but I'm sure it's fun. |

Oryx with babies. Joy's Camp |
This elephant was chasing us and his ears and trunk were flapping as he ran. |
He's closer and still chasing us! And if you think it looks scary, you are correct. It is very scary! They can run pretty fast. |
Lilac Breasted Roller. I saw many Eurasion Rollers on this trip but not too many LBR's. |
I don't know why but I want to call this one "bag of bones". This looked like a leopard at first but it's an old zebra carcass. |
Pale Chanting Goshawk in the Mara |
Honey and her cubs. (Honey was made famous by BBC Big Cat Diaries) |
Cheetah stalking a warthog in the Mara (one of Honey's cubs.) |
It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood |

Sweet face. |
Leopard tortoise? |
Blowing off a little steam. (Okay, it's really dust.) |
A couple of oryx in a beautiful setting |

Joy Adamson (Born Free) was murdered here. |
Black Rhino (my first) Saw this on the way from the airstrip to the camp. |
You can't judge a book by it's cover and you can't judge an elephant by the size of his tusks. |
Mom and baby. |
Knobby kneed ostrich |
Another shot of Honey |
Maasi Mara - do you see the giraffes? |
Secretary Bird |
The eland is the world's largest antelope (600 - 2200 lbs). They are very shy and run away if you try to get close. |
Dik-diks form monogamous relationships. The males have horns. Females are larger than males. |

Meru, Elsa's grave. It was hard to find. |
Elsa's grave. Elsa was made famous by Joy Adamson and Born Free. |
I believe some of Joy's ashes are buried here with Elsa. |
Elsa died from a tick born disease called Babesia. She was only 5 years old. |
RIP, Elsa. |
