Thanks Scott. The flowers are growing up against the stone basement of a nearby house. The bottom of a window of the house can be seen in this pic. Also, to the left of the flowers is a large bush, so I think, you are correct, they have survived because of being sheltered. Yet, they were looking battered a bit from recent cold winds.
