Vacancies

Part of last year's large hornet's nest.
All the occupants are long since deceased.
Each of them had a story. Together they flew many
miles in search of food and wood for nest-building.
Some defended the hive, possibly giving their lives.
Soon all signs of them will be gone.
Where is this year's big nest?
