Before we moved to AZ, our house in MN was surrounded by maple trees. I fought with the downy woodpeckers all the time as they attacked the wood siding. The last time I painted the house, I used a paint that had some additive (I can't recall what) that was supposed to stop them - at least it slowed them down.
