Paul,
Thanks for the stimulus. I went back in and did less aggressive noise reduction on the birds, the same as before on the background. I also tried to pull out more detail on the birds. I think this is better.

Paul,
I just placed a shot in pendinghttp://www.pbase.com/image/166844517
of this (almost the same) jay.
This is taken at 1/500 sec, ISO 200; a lot more light as it was in a tree.
You can see they have pretty smooth feathers anyway.

You guys convinced me.

I just noticed the ISO on your shot and now I realize the cause of the softness, noise reduction which it tremendous for 12800 by the way. Paul

Great day in the canyon, my favorite also. If your cropping in not sure I’d worry too much about the rule of thirds unless you can give it more micro contrast to increase sharpness which I think the crop needs. Paul

You nailed it with that, Jim (IMO).

Dave - see a new crop in pendinghttp://www.pbase.com/image/166844451

Dave - yes I did. I tried both left and bottom. I found the results as 50/50. This crop puts them more on the 1/3 lines than not.
I also think the longer bottom gives more of a sense of height.

I may give it another look.

Winner! This is one of my favorite photos of all that I have seen during challenges. That said (sorry for the "yeah, but"), did you try cropping it a bit more closely? There's a fair amount of uninteresting territory below and to the left of the birds. My two measly cents.

Thanks. This is my favorite of the four. It took awhile this morning for the sun to reach this area.

The double wing spread along with the vibrant colors make great.
