The wife made a dozen of these.

Well, this works very much for me the way it is...Traveller

That doesn't work. I tried a paper towel over the light source, it just turned the one side of the globe white.

I really like the concept and my suggestion for improvement would be try to soften the lighting by placing a sheet of vellum/ tracing paper close to the Santa globe between the light source. You will loose at least 1 or stop of light and will require the tripod and timer on the camera. That also gives you the ability play with the angle of light. Hobby Lobby or most craft stores sell the big sheets of the vellum for just a few dollars and they are excellent atmaking your light source larger, softer and killing dead the reflective specular highlights. These aren't a shake type of snow globe. The white spots are the snow.
Lighting was a over hood light left, an under counter light right,
and an iPad mini running a "soft box" app above and forward.
The background is the 19" flatscreen tv on the kitchen counter.
I did run it through NIK filters.
I'll put an original in pending.

This was a try out, not great, but a start.

This is pretty well done, considering you are shooting through a mason jar. Nicely lit as well.
I'm not sure how I would proceed, but you may need to shoot at f/8 or more through the thick glass. At f/8 you will need the trusty tripod. You may just have to shoot with a variety of apertures.
Photoshop or Lightroom dehaze could also help.

What's interesting to me is that these are made with a Mason Jar...very creative...shake this puppy up and show us some snow....;>}}
