I considered lens rental but I'm guessing they are long past sold out for that time period.

I've heard a lot of good things about the new Sigma 100-400.
B&H has them on sale for $750, free expedited shipping.
For more of the US you'd get it 3 days.
Look for some reviews on Youtube.
There's always Lenrental also.

I have been hem hawing back and forth on getting a longer lens to go up and shoot the eclipse. The tamron 150-600g2 and canon 400L were high on the list. And I was watching a used 400L on eBay. I watched too long and now both I had a eye on are gone...... it's almost too late now to buy a new lense and get it shipped to me. Old saying still goes, you snooze you loose. Paul

A friend wanted to try my Sigma 150-600 C lens.
While he was using my lens, I had his 100-400V2 with a 1.4 tc.

Comparing photos after I got home, I say it's a tie for image IQ.
The Sigma is slightly longer, and ⅔ of a stop faster than the 100-400 with a tc.

The 100-400 is lighter, the Sigma is much cheaper.

That's my mini review.

400 or 100-400 with 1.4x?
