Paul - you are right; with 2 of the custom settings now, I will consider it. I just need to figure out the right settings for birds in flight. I tried a couple of them that someone else recommended, but didn't like the response I got. I'll have to try a few more, then settle on something; and lock it down.
I use one of the C functions for HDR setup right now.
I shoot that more than I do BIF.

None of my cameras have advanced zone focusing such as the 80D but I know if you don't have it setup right you will miss focus time and time again. This may be what was happening. If that happens to be the situation and you get it figured out exactly how to use it you can save that setting to the C1 or C2 on your selector dial and that setup will always be there at the turn of a dial for future use. When I was shooting headshots of eagle scouts for the Boy Scouts and selling families prints I had a very detailed and documented equipment and camera setup and I would use C1 for that. It made it quick and idiot proofed. Paul

Fantastic textures.

Thanks guys. Paul gave me a deserved "boot to the rear " and it triggered me to start thinking again.
Re AI Servo - Recently I have been out walking and trying to shoot birds, dragonflies, and people in motion; and playing with settings. Occasionally I have forgotten to go back to the "one shot" mode when the object stops moving or I spot a still object. I did that with a dragonfly recently that landed; and when I looked at that again, it was clearly out of focus.

Yes, this is a cut above....very clean, nicely detailed, great spray of water. I don't know why you would shoot in AI Servo? Except for tracking a flyng bird, or a running child.

Some of your recent work has seemed a little off to me, a little fuzzy or something...but this is so perfect I don't know what to say, (maybe like Paul warning me to turn off IS when shooting on a tripod and that I need to loose my fear and up my iso substantially)

To be honest, I have never shot anything in AI Servo...even birds I just try to pan.

In any case, jackpot here!

I was going to say forget I even spoke about focusing issues, then I read your comment. Wow is all I gotta say! Problem solved, this kicks ass and takes names and that is the kind of detail we are used to seeing from your photos. Great job. Paul.

This was shot with focus mode set to "One Shot", not AI Servo. I think most of my problems with this lens have come shooting in AI Servo and at the end of the aperture setting, often f/6.3 at 300 mm.
